SeaWorld initiates conservation drive

SEAWORLD Parks

LATIN and

Entertainment has pledged more than US$1m to wildlife conservation programmes in Central and South America through a four-month-long ticket promotion. The company, which operates

the SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and Discovery Cove attractions brands, said the new SeaWorld Cares

campaign would raise cash for several initiatives, including the Nature Conservancy’s work to establish a marine conservation area along the 600-mile Mesoamerican Reef off the coast of Belize and Mexico. The promotion started in September and runs until the

end of the year. During that time, an adult who purchases a full-price, single-day ticket online can get a $5 children’s ticket in which all proceeds are donated. Other organisations set to receive funding are the

National Wildlife Federation and the World Wildlife Fund.

Brazil park turns to the dark side

FOLLOWING the success of Thriller Nights, which was held throughout September at Beto Carrero World last year, the Brazilian theme park once again transformed itself into a suspense attraction in 2010. “Fear” was the key word at Beto Carrero World

from September 2-26, as the Island of Darkness mega production gave visitors a hair-raising experience. During the period, the park, which is located in the Brazilian town of Penha, was clouded in a sinister atmosphere created with mazes, lighting and sound effects and costumed cast members dressed as undead pirates and scary creatures. The 8,000 sq. m Island of Darkness walk-through attraction contained over 100 characters who

challenged visitors to find a secret horde of treasure. Created by the park’s artistic director Clenk Maicon, the island was accessible via a rickety rope bridge, providing guests with a feeling of isolation from the outset. “The concept of accessibility was widely employed for

the implementation of this project, providing all visitors - including disabled, elderly and pregnant women - the ease of travel throughout the course of their visit to the island. Beto Carrero World remains the largest theme park in

Latin America and its popular Island of Pirates attraction formed the basis for Island of Darkness. The attraction was subject to a complete revitalisation over a period of 20 days when many existing elements were temporarily removed and replaced with new themed elements, including kiosks, bridges, rocks, pebbles, sand, water, plants and a host of fear-inducing objects.
