In D.C., Young takes another step forward
Devvarman also moves within one qualifying win of the main draw
by Mark Giannotto Donald Young strode onto the
court of William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Stadium on Saturday for his first-round qualifying match to begin the Legg Mason Tennis Classic with his head down, radi- ant blue-and-white shoes untied, and his racket bag on his shoul- ders like a backpack — a far cry from his hyped entrance into the minds of tennis fans six years ago.
When he turned pro in 2004,
Young was just 14 years old but already magazines like Sports Il- lustrated and Newsweek were touting him as the next great American male tennis star, and more significantly, the new face for African American tennis de- velopment. Young backed up the publicity when, at 16, he became the youngest player to finish the year as the world’s No. 1 junior player after winning the 2005 Australian Open junior title. His fame allowed him to enter
many ATP tournaments as a wild card on sponsor exemptions. But that’s where Young’s meteoric rise hit a speed bump. “I did a lot of things at a young-
er age that other people hadn’t done, so expectations were obvi- ously higher,” said Young, who defeated Fairfax native Michael Shabaz in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2,
on Saturday. He’ll face Slovenian Grega Zemlja Sunday, with the winner advancing to the tourna- ment’s 48-man main draw. “Then you go up, and you’re playing boys against men, but I’m sure if I played a 15-year-old now, I wouldn’t want to let him win, ei- ther. And he probably wouldn’t win.” In retrospect, Young, who turned 21 in July, realizes that playing so many ATP events at such a young age hurt his devel- opment. Going up against bigger and stronger opponents, he was constantly on the defensive and never established a definitive weapon on the court. Though his ranking climbed to as high as No. 73 in the world in 2007 — largely because of results on the Futures and Challenger Tours, tennis’s version of the mi- nor leagues — between 2005 and 2008, Young won just 11 of his 46 matches in ATP events.
“I went through a really tough
time . . . and it did hurt my confi- dence for awhile,” said Young, who was born in Chicago but now lives in Atlanta. “On the oth- er hand, my name got out there and you’re getting eight grand, five grand every time you play.” When the 2010 season began,
Young was No. 194 in the world, his days as a tennis phenom a distant memory. The wild cards are no longer a given, and like this week, he has to qualify for many of the ATP events he en- ters.
But Young, a left-hander who relies on his athleticism and smooth groundstrokes, has slow-
ly begun creeping back into rele- vancy. He recently cracked the top 100 again after advancing to the second round of this year’s Australian Open and making sev- eral strong showings on the Chal- lenger circuit. Still, Young isn’t yet the domi-

nant player many thought he might become. He doesn’t dwell on this, though, instead choosing to focus on the immediate fu- ture’s challenges. “Yeah, a lot has been expected
of me,” he said. “Is it fair or un- fair, I don’t know. A lot of things
