Saturday D.C. Soap Box Derby  Monday-June 27 “The Tillman Story” at Silverdocs Documentary Festival  Saturday Silvio Rodriguez PHOTOS, FROM LEFT: KATHERINE FREY/THE WASHINGTON POST; SILVERDOCS; FUEGO ENTERTAINMENT

FETE DE LA MUSIQUE Friday Each year on June 21, French streets, train stations, museums and just about anywhere a busker can stand, become packed with musicians who want to spread the joys of live music. The ebullient spirit of Music Day (La Fete de la Musique) comes alive in Washington at the Alliance Francaise. A children’s program begins at 5:30 p.m., an open stage runs from 6:15 p.m. to 10 p.m. and a DJ spins French and international tunes until midnight. Alliance Francaise, 2142 Wyoming Ave. NW. 202-234-7911. www.francedc.org. Free admission until 10 p.m.; registration required. $8 from 10 p.m. to midnight.

D.C. SOAP BOX DERBY Saturday FREE Who needs an internal combustion engine when you have four wheels, two axles, a fiberglass chassis and, most important, gravity? Constitution Avenue turns into something resembling the back stretch of Daytona on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. as participants between ages 8 and 17 race their homemade chariots downhill for a shot at national finals in Akron, Ohio. Constitution Avenue between New Jersey and Louisiana avenues NW. www.dcsoapboxderby.org.

JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION Saturday FREE When Texas’s slaves finally cast off

their chains on June 19, 1865, they had little notion that the occasion would eventually be recognized as a holiday in 36 states. Maryland gets in on the Juneteenth celebration with a day of musical performances, living history demonstrations, old-fashioned games, food and exhibits Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Watkins Regional Park, 301 Watkins Park Dr., Upper Marlboro. 301-218-6700. 301-699-2456. www. pgparks.com.

SILVIO RODRIGUEZ Saturday

Cuban folk singer Silvio Rodriguez is set to play his first shows in the United States in 30 years. Why is this important? It’s the first time the U.S. government has granted the 63-year-old pro-Castro musician a travel visa since Jimmy Carter was in the White House. Hear the thought-provoking words of a Cuban legend (and onetime member of parliament) when Rodriguez plays Washington for the first time Saturday at 7:30 p.m. DAR Constitution Hall, 18th and C streets NW (Metro: Farragut West). 202-628-4780. 202-397-7328. www.dar.org/conthall. $76-$150.

“ZAIDE” Saturday Opera isn’t usually much of an interactive experience, but thanks to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s unfinished “Zaide,” audience participation is just as important as the third act. Two captives find love

in a foreign land, and it’s up to the audience to decide whether the story, performed by the Wolf Trap Opera Company at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, ends triumphantly or tragically. The Barns at Wolf Trap, 1635 Trap Rd., Vienna. 703-938-2404. 877-965-3872. www.wolftrap.org. $32-$72.

MANASSAS WINE & JAZZ FESTIVAL Sunday You have two days to find a Father’s Day gift; what are you going to do? If you answered, “Buy Dad some fancy beer,” you’re taking the cliched way out. Instead, take Dad to the Manassas Wine & Jazz Festival, where 20 Virginia wineries will be dispensing samples Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Whether your dad is already a wine connoisseur or he doesn’t know the difference between a cabernet and a Riesling, buy him a bottle of whatever he likes and share it with him over dinner that night. Way better than a dusty six-pack, right? Loy E. Harris Pavilion, 9201 Center St., Manassas. 703-361-9800. $20, includes wine tastings; $10 without tastings. For more Father’s Day ideas, see Page 43.

AFI SILVERDOCS DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL Monday-June 27 For one week each year, Silver Spring becomes the documentary film capital of the world as 102 films — old and new, from high-profile

directors and independent DIYers alike — are screened. The festival opens Monday at 7:30 p.m. with Morgan Spurlock’s “Freakonomics.” (It’s sold out, but standby tickets might get you in.) Other highlights include a screening of Oliver Stone’s controversial “South of the Border” Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. followed by a discussion with Stone; and “The Tillman Story,” above, which examines the circumstances surrounding the death of NFL star turned Army Ranger Pat Tillman June 26 at 7:30 p.m. AFI Silver Theatre, 8633 Colesville Rd., Silver Spring (Metro: Silver Spring). 301-495-6720. www.silverdocs.com. $10. Turn to Page 32 for a complete Silverdocs schedule.

“GRASS ROOTS: AFRICAN ORIGINS OF AN AMERICAN ART” Wednesday-Nov. 28 FREE It may seem like a pedestrian vessel, but the coiled basket’s history as a tool used for processing rice stretches back hundreds of years on multiple continents. In this traveling exhibition, explore the

SMITHSONIAN FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL Thursday-June 28, July 1-5 Asian Pacific Americans, Mexico and “Smithsonian Inside Out,” a behind-the-scenes look at Smithsonian projects, are the focus of this year’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Sample music, food, cultural demonstrations and workshops from Thursday through June 28 and again July 1-5 on the Mall between 10th and 14th streets. The Mall, between the U.S. Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial (Metro: Smithsonian). 202-485-9880. www.festival.si.edu.
