The ebullient spirit of Music Day (La Fete de la Musique) comes alive in Washington at the Alliance Francaise. Constitution Avenue turns into something resembling the back stretch of Daytona on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. as participants between ages 8 and 17 race their homemade chariots downhill for a shot at national finals in Akron, Ohio. Cuban folk singer Silvio Rodriguez is set to play his first shows in the United States in 30 years. Why is this important? It’s the first time the U.S. government has granted the 63-year-old pro-Castro musician a travel visa since Jimmy Carter was in the White House. “ZAIDE” Saturday Opera isn’t usually much of an interactive experience, but thanks to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s unfinished “Zaide,” audience participation is just as important as the third act. Two captives find love

AFI SILVERDOCS DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL Monday-June 27 For one week each year, Silver Spring becomes the documentary film capital of the world as 102 films — old and new, from high-profile
directors and independent DIYers alike — are screened. The festival opens Monday at 7:30 p.m. with Morgan Spurlock’s “Freakonomics.” (It’s sold out, but standby tickets might get you in.)
