Ubaldo Jimenez allowed one run on eight hits to improve to 13-1 on the season in Colo- rado’s victory over Minnesota. Jimenez’s earned run aver- age dropped to 1.15, and the 26-year-old Dominican is off to the best start by a pitcher since Roger Clemens went 14-0 in 1986. Ryan Spilborghs hit a two- run homer and Troy Tulowitzki added an RBI-triple and two runs for the Rockies, who avoided a three-game sweep. Colorado

Braves: 3B Chipper Jones says he won’t be making a decision on retirement until after the season. He had indicated for two days he was close to announcing whether to call it a career. Dodgers: SS Rafael Furcal went on the bereavement list before the series finale against Cincinnati. He left for the Dominican Republic to be with an ailing family member. Pirates: Manager John Russell and GM Neal Huntington had their contracts extended through the 2011 season this past winter, but the team did not announce the deals. Team President Frank Coonelly acknowledged the extensions in a statement issued Thursday, one day after
FoxSports.com reported Russell was on the verge on being fired. Rockies: SS Troy Tulowitzki left Thursday’s game in the eighth inning after getting hit by a pitch on his left hand. He remained in the game on the bases, but he was pulled when the defense took the field. Manager Jim Tracy said an initial examination revealed no serious damage.

Scott Podsednik hit a three- run homer, lifting Kansas City in a game that included a bi- zarre reversed call by the um- pires. The play happened with one out in the fifth inning, when Kansas City’s Yuniesky Betan- court hit a soft liner to short- stop with a runner on second. 2B umpire Mike Everitt initially ruled Geoff Blum caught the ball on a fly, then stepped on second to double up David De- Jesus for the final out. After meeting near the mound, the umpires ruled the ball hit the ground before Blum fielded it, and they called both teams back out to the field. Houston

R.A. Dickey won his fifth straight start, and New York stretched its winning streak to seven games by beating Cleve- land. The surging Mets have won 18 of 23 to go from last place to a half-game behind NL East- leading Atlanta. They have six consecutive road wins. Dickey tied a club record for a Mets starter by winning his first five decisions. Bobby Oje- da (1986), Armando Reynoso (1997) and Kenny Rogers (1999) also did it. New York

Kyle Kendrick kept New York guessing, Shane Victorino homered and Placido Polanco made a sprawling catch to lift Philadelphia. The Phillies beat Andy Pettitte and took two of three at Yankee Stadium. This was Kendrick’s night, from the moment he struck out leadoff man Derek Jeter. A day after 47-year-old lefty Jamie Moyer’s soft tosses bamboo- zled the Yankees, they had no luck timing the change-ups from Kendrick.

Nationals Journal
6voices.washingtonpost.com/nationalsjournal Pitch count won’t alter
Strasburg’s approach As long as the Washington
Nationals restrict the number of pitches Stephen Strasburg throws, his efficiency will determine how long he can affect the game. The person least concerned with the rules that apply to him may be Strasburg himself. “I’m not going to change the way I
pitch,” Strasburg said Thursday. “If they feel like it’s time to take me out of the game, they’re going to take me out. I’m going to go out there and give it everything I have as long as I can.” For his third start, Friday against
the Chicago White Sox his pitch count will be roughly 100, the same as in his last start. “It’s not a hard-and-fast number,”
Manager Jim Riggleman said. “If it’s a situation where he could finish an inning for us and he’s up around that number and exceeded it, I think we’d be okay with that.” The Nationals will also limit
Strasburg’s innings in each start. He has yet to pitch into the eighth inning this season in the minors or majors, and if somehow Strasburg throws seven innings using a modicum of pitches, the Nationals will be hesitant to let him go further. “That’s a barrier we may cross at some point,” Riggleman said. “We’re being very cautious. [Strasburg could] go out there for the ninth. But
there’s reasons to not do it, so we’re not doing it.” The Nationals expect another large crowd Friday, but as of Thursday afternoon tickets were available, a team spokesman said. The crowd will surely dwarf a typical Nationals Park game, and his drawing power provides an extra buzz. “I think it’s a beautiful thing,”
center fielder Nyjer Morgan said. “It gives us a chance to really come out and shine. When this kid pitches, they’re coming to see him. But there are still going to be 40, 50,000 people, plus you got the whole nation watching. It’s going to bring extra pizazz to your game. You feel the energy. You feed off the energy.”
Dunn deconstructed Adam Dunn continued his hot
hitting with a home run in each of the last two games of the Washington Nationals’ series against the Detroit Tigers. The blasts, however, continued another trend: Both were solo shots. Of Dunn’s team-leading 16 home runs, 12 have come with no one on base. But his homers have come at crucial times — 11 of them have either tied the score or put the Nationals ahead. The way pitchers approach Dunn has cost him multi-run homers, he said, and he cited his blast off Justin Verlander on Wednesday night as an example.
“He’s not going to probably to give me a pitch like that with runners on base,” Dunn said Wednesday. “That’s what people don’t realize. I can’t pick and choose when I hit a home run. If I could, I would have zero solos every year. Pitchers, they want quick outs and sometimes they mess up. You don’t get usually the same pitches with runners on. And then it gets even harder when you get runners in scoring position. I don’t pick and choose.”
If you believe that some players are clutch and some aren’t, then you probably think Dunn is not. One stat that doesn’t bode well for Dunn in that regard: His RBI single in the eighth inning of Thursday’s 8-3 loss snapped a skid in which he was 0 for 26 with three walks with runners in scoring position and two outs. But even as the Nationals have stumbled to 11 wins in their past 32 games, Dunn for some time has been the force the Nationals need in the middle of their lineup. “Adam’s been pretty good for a while now,” Riggleman said. “He’s doing his part.” Since May 1, Dunn is hitting .321
with a .392 on-base percentage, a .654 slugging percentage and 12 home runs in 43 games. For the year, his batting average is .288, 37 points above his career average, and his OPS is .957, which would be the best of his career.
