Gulf Coast Oil Spill

‘Oil and gas’ gathering with Texas politician preceded a hearing

by Carol D. Leonnig

Lobbyists for BP hosted at least 53 fundraising parties for lawmakers and candidates in re- cent years — four of them since the explosion and oil spill at a BP-run oil drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico, according to a watch- dog group’s analysis. Lobbyists typically represent multiple clients, and it is un- known how many of the events were intended to advance BP’s interests. The numbers are based on fundraiser data compiled by the Sunlight Foundation, which collects information from anony- mous donors and lobbyist re- ports. The list is incomplete, and it is possible the lobbyists held other fundraisers as well. Nine of the 11 known fund-

raisers this year were hosted by lobbyist Tony Podesta or other lobbyists for his firm, the Podesta Group, who represent the com- pany as well as many other inter- ests.

Since the Deepwater Horizon

rig’s explosion in the gulf on April 20, here are the fundraisers by lobbyists who represent BP:  Paul Brathwaite and Cristina Antelo, who both lobby for the Podesta Group, were among nu- merous hosts for a May 26 party benefiting CHC-BOLD PAC, a PAC for the Congressional His- panic Caucus.  Tim Glassco, also a lobbyist for the Podesta Group, was a host of a “young professionals” happy hour on May 25 for Rep. Glenn Nye (D-Va.).  Dan Meyer, a lobbyist for the Duberstein Group, was a host of an April 29 event for Carly Fiori- na, who was seeking the GOP nomination for a California U.S. Senate seat.  Podesta and his wife, Heather,

The oil spill: The latest developments

 With a new oil-burning system, siphoning capacity will hit 28,000 barrels (1.176 million gallons) a day “early next week,” vs. the 18,600 barrels (781,200 gallons) that BP trapped on Wednesday, according to Coast Guard Adm. Thad W. Allen

 “I am deeply sorry” for the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill, BP chief executive Tony Hayward told the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

 “I apologize,” Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) said to Hayward. Barton said the $20 billion escrow account “amounts to a shakedown. So I apologize.”

 “I apologize for using the term ‘shakedown’ ” Barton said later in a statement.

have raised cash for lawmakers, too, sometimes with uncomfort- able timing. On May 12, exec- utives including BP’s chairman, Lamar McKay, Transocean chief executive Steve Newman and Halliburton’s Timothy Probert appeared before a hearing in the House Energy and Commerce

About an hour earlier, House Re- publicans had gathered a few blocks away for an “oil and gas breakfast” fundraiser with in- dustry members to benefit Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Tex). David Donnelly, of the Cam- paign for Fair Elections, said he wasn’t surprised that fundraisers were held by the lobbyists of BP

Washington never ends, even when there are disasters like in the Gulf Coast and when the economy crashes. Members of Congress still have to look for money,” Donnelly said. Later in the day, GOP lead- ers demanded that Barton re- tract his apology and stress BP’s responsibility for the spill. Barton, who was elected to Congress in 1984, has received $27,000 in campaign contribu- tions from BP and its affiliates and $1.4 million from the oil and gas industry as a whole, accord-

ing to campaign finance records. “It’s amazing that Rep. Barton would stand up for a multina- tional corporation that has wrecked the livelihoods of so many people along the Gulf Coast,” Donnelly said. “Com- ments like this make all Amer- icans question whether Congress represents them or the special interests funding their cam- paigns.”

Clinton pushes Cuba for Md. man’s release

Associated Press Secretary of State Hillary Rod-

ham Clinton renewed calls on Thursday for Cuba to release a U.S. government contractor from Potomac, whom it has held for more than six months without charge. U.S. and Cuban officials are to

meet in Washington on Friday for immigration talks, and Clinton said that U.S. representatives would raise the case of the con- tractor, Alan P. Gross.

Gross, 60, was working for a

firm contracted by the U.S. Agen- cy for International Development when he was arrested as a sus- pected spy Dec. 3 at Havana’s Jose Martí International Airport. He has been held without charge at the capital’s high-security Villa Marista prison ever since. Judy Gross has said that her husband had brought communi- cations equipment intended for humanitarian purposes, not for use by Cuba’s dissidents. Satellite phones and other telecommuni- cations materials are outlawed in Cuba.
