NOTEBOOK

Switzerland credits U.S. for its upset of Spain

Strategy was derived from Americans’ game vs. Spanish last year Gelson Fernandes scored the

goal and Diego Benaglio pro- duced the saves, but it was the United States that inspired the gameplan for Switzerland’s 1-0 shocker over Spain on Wednes- day.

Swiss Manager Ottmar Hitz-

feld offered a tip of the cap to Bob Bradley and his staff. Drawing from strategy im- plemented by the Americans against the Spanish at the Con- federations Cup in South Africa last year, Hitzfeld devised a plan that conceded possession, clogged the middle of the park and counterattacked rapidly. “We saw how the Americans

played against Spain with a lot of interest,” Hitzfeld said. “You know that if you are going to have a chance against [Spain] you need to do certain things very well. The USA did not try to do everything. They accepted the fact that Spain has pace and width and simply made sure they kept the center of defense as tight as they could. It is not a perfect system, but it was a very interesting tactic and it worked.”

— Steven Goff A U.S.-Slovenia bet

Roman Kirn, the Slovenian ambassador to the United States, plans to join fellow Slo- venes for a viewing party Friday at Dupont Circle’s Buffalo Bil- liards, where he’ll find out if he has to make good on the wager he made with U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa). Harkin, whose mother is from Slovenia, bet a bottle of Iowa’s Templeton rye whiskey, while Kirn ven- tured a bottle of red wine from Bagueri, a Slovenian label. “We all expect a win,” said

Masa Siftar de Arzu, second sec- retary of the Slovenian Embas- sy, in a telephone interview. “I know it’s not going to be an easy game. But when our team played against Russia [to qual-

ify for a spot in the 2010 World Cup] and won — trust me, that wasn’t an easy game, either. “We have a young team —

maybe not very experienced, all of them — but a very good team of friends. The feeling is one for all, and all for one. In such an atmosphere, everything is pos- sible.”

— Liz Clarke Australia’s Cahill out

Australia captain Tim Cahill will miss his team’s Group D match against Ghana after FI- FA confirmed his one-match ban for a red card Thursday. Cahill was sent off for a foul on Bastian Schweinsteiger in the 56th minute of Australia’s 4-0 opening defeat to Germany on Sunday. The midfielder re- ceived only the automatic one- match ban, which covers Satur- day’s game against Ghana; FIFA could have increased the penal- ty if it found his foul serious enough. “We are glad that they did not deem the tackle serious enough to warrant anything further,” said John Boultbee, a spokes- man with the Australian feder- ation. FIFA also said South Africa

goalkeeper Itumeleg Khune will miss his team’s final Group A match against France because of the red card he received in Wednesday’s 3-0 loss to Uru- guay. But South Africa coach Carlos Alberto Parreira will not be sanctioned over negative comments he made about the referee in that match.

Man beaten to death

Police say a South African man who wanted to watch a World Cup match instead of a religious program was beaten to death by his family. David Makoeya, a 61-year-old man from the small village of Makweya, Limpopo province, fought with his wife and two children for the remote control on Sunday because he wanted to watch Germany play Aus- tralia in the World Cup. — Associated Press

.182 7A Thursday’s Results

The keynote speaker’s voice boomed across the auditorium at the Blacksburg (Va.) High School graduation early last Sunday morning and Kathleen Stevens barely heard a word. She’d nodded off in her chair and fallen over onto her sister, Joanna, her head tilted back like a Pez dispenser. The Ste- vens sisters, identical twins and Virginia’s top two distance run- ners, had just flown in from an elite race in New York and, in- side Virginia Tech’s Burruss Hall, Kathleen finally hit a wall. She promises to be more alert while competing at New Bal- ance Outdoor Nationals this weekend. Kathleen and Joanna are entered in Friday’s twomile and, on Saturday, along with teammates Hannah Brown and Sarah Dorrell, will be the favor- ites to win the distance medley relay. That, they say, is their money

event. Not only does the quartet want to win the championship, but they will be chasing the na- tional high school record. “We’re definitely in the hunt

for that,” Joanna, 18, said. Kathleen was born first—

she’s older than Joanna by eight minutes—so it makes sense that she was first to discover the ex- quisite gift she and her sister share. The twins played soccer for six years before arriving at Blacksburg as freshmen. But af- ter running cross-country in the fall and becoming a serious contributor on the Bruins team that won the 2006 state title, Kathleen decided to quit soccer and “do this running thing a while longer.” It took more time—and some

arm-twisting by Kathleen—for Joanna to switch. She waited until the day of outdoor track tryouts before finally peeling herself away from soccer. What it ultimately boiled down to

was Joanna “didn’t want me getting faster than her,” Kath- leen laughed. The laughter masked all but a touch of seriousness in Kath- leen’s voice. The twins are that competitive. Things can get pretty intense when your big- gest rival sleeps in the next bed- room. The times that separate the

twins on the course and on the track are, for the most part, eye- lash thin. Their accomplish- ments? Sublimely parallel. Kathleen (headed to Virginia) broke the course record at the Virginia state cross-country championships last fall in 17 minutes 34 seconds. Joanna (Georgetown) was second in 17:39, third fastest all-time. During indoor track, Joanna broke AA state meet records in the 3,200 meters (10:29.70) and in the 1,600 (4:50.07). At the state outdoor champi- onships two weeks ago, Kath- leen won the 3,200 in 10:16.03, the fourth-fastest time in the country. Joanna was a half- blink behind in 10:16.46. Both times obliterated the meet rec- ord of 10:21.15 set by 2005 Fau- quier graduate and 2008 Olym- pic trials finalist Sarah Bow- man. “They’re always right on each

other,” seventh-year Blacksburg Coach James DeMarco said. “They realize that because they have each other they have done some amazing things.” The most amazing thing they could do, Kathleen said, would be to claim that national record on Saturday. The girls from Blacksburg came tantalizingly close in April when they won the distance medley Champi- onship of America at Penn Re- lays by more than five seconds in 11:38.69, a meet record and the fastest time in the country. It was well shy of the national record of 11:31.81, set by War- wick Valley (N.Y.) at the Out- door Nationals meet in 2008 . Still, DeMarco said, it is within striking distance. “They don’t have to do anything unbeliev- able. Just be a tad better than what they’ve been at,” he said. littlec@washpost.com
