CONSTRUCTION FIXINGS
Delivering commitment
At its 2009 conference the Construction Fixings Association
focused on adding value. Demonstrating its own commitment
the CFA launched a series of training activities for its Approved
Distributors and their customers. We caught up with Mark Salmon
delivering on that commitment in Sheffi eld.
Visit Grayson Fixings and Fasteners and one is left in no doubt about its commitment to being “an historic business with a truly modern
outlook” or how seriously it takes its role as a CFA Approved Distributor. Grayson moved into a purpose built warehouse and three level offi ce
block during 2009 – and, as you can see, grasped with both hands the opportunity to present itself as “a modern, dynamic, customer focused
company supplying fi xings, fasteners and consumables to the construction industry and local authorities”.
Behind its modern trade counter a large display screen provides a constant reiteration of Grayson service commitment, the pride it takes
in CFA membership and stark reminders of the dangers of compromising on fi xings quality.
“I am delighted with the way Grayson has integrated the key principles of
the Approved Distributor scheme into its business,” says CFA general manager
and trainer for the three days, Mark Salmon. “I have been provided with a great
welcome, an excellent new training room, and safely segregated warehouse space
for the practical stuff.”
The programme
included two days
carrying out ‘Competent
Installer Training’ for
site personnel from two
Grayson’ customers. “Both
companies already take
a very professional approach to what they are doing, so are not the real target we
need to get to,” says Mark. “These will be the fi rst installers to gain “Competent
Installer” certifi cation from the CFA Academy, which we hope will add value to
what they offer their own clients and, as awareness of the qualifi cation grows, create
demand from other contractors for similar certifi cation.”
The third day was dedicated to ‘Basic Anchor Technology’ training for staff
from Grayson. A combination of ‘classroom’ and practical demonstrations provided a thorough insight into different anchor technologies and
their safe and effective use in a range of materials. Following the course Mark commented: “I am very encouraged by the results of these
sessions as all the delegates asked constructive questions throughout the courses and did well
in the assessment tests. I am looking forward to rolling out the “Advanced Anchor Technology”
courses to Approved Distributors in 2010. These are aimed at fi eld sales staff and go into far
more depth so will enable sales staff to be more professional in solving clients’ problems. It
is also particularly gratifying to get
the Competent Installer courses
underway because this completes our
commitment to supporting everyone
through the whole fi xings chain.
The Grayson customers’ staff who
attended assured me they gained a lot
from the course but they were already
at a good level of competence. We
hope that more of our Approved
Distributors will be able to sell
the benefi ts of this course to their
customers as has been demonstrated
by Grayson GB Ltd.”
