54 NEW DEVELOPMENTS
Taking a eco-house to three levels Engineered timber joists manufactured by Boise Cascade have been employed to create a fully habitable roof space or third floor within an individual house design, achieving Level 5 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, located near Nottingham. Andrew Banks, of Banks Design Architects, has led the project to build the property on a brownfield site in Beeston. In doing so, he called on Frame Wise Limited, from Mid-Wales, to supply and erect the main structural frame, featuring the Boise BCI joist for constructing both the two upper floor levels, and the roof itself. Timber trusses simplify design solutions
Stephen George Partners has made repeated use of the design service offered by Harlow Timber Systems, a member of the Trussed Rafter Association (TRA), to help overcome a variety of practical challenges in delivering different construction projects’ including two staff accommodation buildings for a Nottinghamshire hospital trust. Stephen George Partners is active in the retail, commercial and private residential sectors as well as public buildings and has enjoyed a long-term working relationship with Harlow Timber Systems. The latter involved the fabrication of a complex series of mono and stub trusses forming the hipped roofs to the two stepped level structures; together with fire rated spandrel panels running the length of the buildings as a continuation of the main party wall.

Hatches Surespan Limited is proud to introduce a new pressure-sensitive leading edge (PSE) feature which can be applied to any of its electrically operated access hatches or smoke vents to prevent accidental closure. Although Surespan’s hatches already incorporate a hold-open stay mechanism, this revolutionary new safety feature prevents anyone being accidentally trapped when the hatch is opening or closing. Its built-in sensor recognises if it is going to make contact with anything, and automatically reverses. It can be incorporated to any of its single or double leaf roof hatches, which can be custom built to order. Available with a polyester powder coated finish, they are insulated against heat loss and condensation and can incorporate weighted sound reductions up to
Rω=45db. Surespan hatches are also available with a range of locking options and a retractable safety grids, ladder extensions and hand holds.

Years of research have resulted in the development of a disposable electrode which can quickly and accurately detect the presence and concentration of potentially harmful heavy metals such as lead, copper and cadmium in a variety of sample type. Left-over or leaked deposits of these substances are known to be toxic, and can be a serious 'hidden' hazard; over the years legislation has been progressively introduced to combat the threat.
