Getting It Right

For Andrea Miller, DVM, most of life’s major decisions haven’t really been decisions at all. Her interest in veterinary medicine was solidifi ed by the age of eight when her affi nity for chasing geese in the park, bringing stray animals home, and spending her free time at the local petting zoo made it clear that she was headed for a career that would involve helping animals. She didn’t exactly choose her career – it chose her.

After earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, Miller completed her doctorate in veterinary medicine at The Ohio State University and began practicing at a small animal clinic in the Columbus area. When she transferred to a corporate veterinary practice she was able to sharpen her medical skills. The practice provided a large caseload, opportunity to perform a signifi cant number of surgical procedures, and senior doctors who took the time to provide valuable mentorship. Her communication skills improved as she became familiar with handling diffi cult situations and adept at explaining options and helping pet owners make the best decisions possible for their beloved pets.

Miller loved the work, but opening her own clinic had been something she always aspired to. The more she thought about it, and discussed ideas with her husband, the more possible it began to feel. Then, serendipitously, over the course of several months, she ran into three former classmates who had each opened their own practices within the past year.

Miller had lots of questions: How did you fi nd the space? How did you pay for it? Who helped you through the process? What type of software are you using? These chance meetings and the conversations that were sparked fueled her interest and helped her realize that her former classmates had the same questions, concerns and fears when they embarked on the path to business ownership.. “ “The more I talked to them, the more I realized that if they could do it, I could do it,” said Miller.

As her dream began to take shape, Miller knew she needed to reach out to experts who could help. Because fi nancing was a major concern, she scheduled a meeting with a Bank of America ra representative, who connected her with Patterson Representative Travis Rockey.. “ “II r really trusted Travis right away,” said Miller. “From ordering equipment to explaining the diff erences between tables and X-ray equipment, thinking about durability and pricing, he helped me work within my budget to get the equipment I needed.
