Blueprint event, now called Guiding Practice Success (GPS), because the training really helped. When she started the training program in Denver, she didn’t know what to do or what to expect or how to start the process. But by the end of it, she started thinking about key factors like choice of contractor and income drivers like radiology, dental and having an in-house lab. It was a really great program for Shani, based on where she was at that point,” said Fletcher.
Empowered with the knowledge gained from the GPS event, Scherr returned to Maryland ready to bring this hospital to life. Together with Fletcher, Scherr and Morgan visited a number of potential sites. They ultimately found a space in a strip mall that had previously been a veterinary hospital, but needed a lot of TLC. “The space was in pretty bad shape when we fi rst saw it. It had been a veterinary hospital that had essentially been abandoned and stripped, so there was a lot of work that needed to be done. But it was already zoned as an animal hospital, so it ended up being the perfect space for Shani and Amanda,” said Fletcher.
Now that they had the location chosen, Fletcher worked with Patterson offi ce designer Mike Reynolds (learn more about Reynolds and Patterson’s DesignEdge on pages 60-61) on the practice layout. Reynolds, who has extensive experience in veterinary hospital design, had one big structural challenge to consider while designing Valley Dog & Cat Hospital. “There was a load bearing wall that basically ran front-to-back through a large part of the space. Mike’s challenge was to design a functional veterinary workfl ow around the wall, so we could keep construction costs down,” said Fletcher.
