Openings and Expansions

KUKA Systems Aerospace (Sterling Heights, MI; Augs- burg, Germany) in April opened its new R&D and produc- tion facility for advanced automation solutions in Le Haillan, France. The investment underscores KUKA’s com- mitment to meeting the rising global demand for sophisticated robotic processes used in aircraft assembly. The Le Haillan facility manufactures multifunction end effectors, as does the KUKA Systems global head- quarters for aerospace in the US. KUKA acquired the French operation, formerly known as Alema Automation in March 2014. That followed years of a distributorship agreement and close collaboration between the compa- nies. Construction of the facility in Le Haillan, a suburb of Bordeaux, was completed this January. The build- ing comprises 1445 m2 space and 1123 m2

Mergers, Acquisitions & Partnerships

Ford and DowAksa on April 17 an- nounced they had signed a joint devel- opment agreement to formally advance research on cost-effective, high-volume manufacturing of automotive-grade car- bon fi ber, a material poised to play a sig- nifi cant role in the drive to make vehicles lighter for greater fuel effi ciency, perfor- mance and capability. The agreement, between Ford Motor Co., Ford Global Technologies and DowAksa —a 50/50 joint venture between The Dow Chemi- cal Company and Aksa Akrilik Kimya Sanayii AS—will combine DowAksa’s feedstock capacity, carbon fi ber conver- sion and downstream intermediates pro- duction capabilities with Ford’s expertise
