uccessful production and transportation of oil and gas products depends largely on reliable performance of miles of steel tubing. Integrity of the links between segments of the casings and pipes used in downhole drilling and overland delivery is crucial in preventing costly fail- ures that waste product and can harm the environment. But what is often unknown is that the performance and safety of these critical connections hinge, in part, on ad- vanced workholding technology. Today’s automatic center- ing and swiveling chucks, for instance, allow producers of threaded connections, couplings and bushings to streamline
their threading operations, while at the same time boosting process precision and consistency to generate the most reli- able threads and connections possible.
Oil & gas tubing and piping (known in the industry as oil country tubular goods or OCTG) can range in diameter from about 6 to 22" (150–560 mm), with individual segments in the neighborhood of 40' (12-m) long. Workpiece materials include hot-rolled or cold-drawn 4130 and 4140 steels and carbon-manganese and chrome-molybdenum steel alloys. Manufacturers cut OD threads on both tube ends using through-spindle lathes.
