wasted. Absolute guaranteed 100% utilization of insert edges is impossible, but even a reduction of missed edges from 25 to 20% can represent signifi cant savings.
Benefi ts of Chrome-Colored Coating An earlier solution to the used-edge-detection problem in- volved the application of a gold TiN or TiC coating that would wear off and provide an indication of edge usage. However, in some cases the additional coating negatively affected tool life. Seco’s chrome-colored coating has no negative effects on tool life. While it technically adds a degree of lubricity, its positive effect on tool life is negligible.
Overall, these new Duratomic insert grades have the tech- nology and balance necessary to easily address the different types of metal-cutting challenges found in various applica- tions, shop work patterns and industries. Often, many job-shop operations require tough tools to handle machining of steel forgings that may be rough or out of round, resulting in variable depths of cut on the fi rst pass. Automotive manufacturers, for instance, seek consistent tool life with a continuing need to increase output in produc- tion situations, while on the other hand, oil & gas machining operations typically involve long turning passes on lengthy, large-diameter segments of pipe. Generating high surface speeds on a 40' (12-m) long, 4' (1.2-m) diameter pipe is dif- fi cult, so the focus is on maximum tool life and reliability, as opposed to sheer machining speed.
A Trio of Options
As machining challenges continue to change, the three new Seco Duratomic grades provide users with options. For example, TP2501 is the tougher, general-application grade of the trio. It is a good general solution and starting point for a job shop that processes short runs of parts in a variety of steel alloys. The operations may include rough machin- ing and some interrupted cuts. The toughness of the grade permits application with or without coolant. A job-shop user can consistently meet rush deadlines using just one grade and perhaps a choice of roughing and fi nishing chip-control geometries. The focus is on reliably completing jobs and not so much optimizing operations for maximum output. The fi rst-choice TP2501 grade offers the broadest working range and is the “go-to” insert for most users. As a shop moves into higher-production situations and has the time and desire to optimize machining parameters, the new grade TP1501 offers higher hardness that permits use of increased cutting speeds. per-hour production and solid reliability are goals. Lower- alloyed and lower-carbon steels such as those employed in automotive parts are emphasized. The grade possesses higher hardness with maximized edge toughness, provid- ing enhanced resistance to wear and deformation for low- to medium-temperature, semi-interrupted cutting conditions. Coolant use is optional. TP1501 also has properties that make it highly effective in the machining of gray cast irons. Grade TP0501, the third member of the new Duratomic
group, is engineered to perform well in turning operations that generate high temperatures, such as long, continuous passes at heavy depths of cut. The heat-resistant grade can be run without coolant in many situations. Typical applica- tions are long turning operations on large pipe segments in the oil & gas industry. A balance of high edge hardness and toughness boosts the wear resistance of TP0501 inserts, es- pecially for more stable high-temperature, continuous cutting conditions. Grade TP0501 is engineered for application in all steels, with particular emphasis on high-alloy materials. As machining challenges continue to change, all three new Duratomic grades provide today’s manufacturers the of- ten-unachievable balance of hardness and toughness to truly optimize machining operations. Plus, the working windows of the new grades overlap, providing maximum productivity and reliability. In combination, they represent an integrated, ef- fi cient solution for steel-turning operations industry-wide.
