Though Brogan has a competitive spirit and

strives to win every tournament, she said medals aren’t everything to her. She simply loves the sport. “You’re competing against yourself,” Brogan

said. “You can see improvement in yourself. I think that’s why I love it.” Her drive for personal development is one reason Brogan believes she’s done so well. She attributes growth in her self-confidence to ar- chery, saying, “I used to be shy. I never thought I would be this bubbly.” Brogan thinks the combination of archery’s self-driven nature and of meeting other archers brought her out of a shell. “The people are amazing,” she said. “Archery has all sorts of people in it. It’s very family ori- ented, and we treat each other like family. We’re very close.” Her parents, Shawna and Daryl, and boy- friend Lewis Monroe are Brogan’s primary sup- port system. Shawna handles the coaching. Monroe helps with equipment. Daryl, according to Shawna, handles snacks and takes enough naps for the whole team. Sticking with archery hasn’t always been easy. In high school, Brogan often practiced six days a week, shooting up to three hours at a time. Archery also meant no more horseback riding, one of her favorite pastimes. As Brogan rose in the archery world, so did financial hurdles. A personal coach was out of the question, so her mother learned the art of coaching and began training Brogan. Now, Shawna said, she’s become so adept at reading Brogan’s form that she can tell when the tiniest muscle twitch is a problem.

Another problem arises in the form of hefty price tags for the best equipment. That’s a sacri- fice, Shawna said, she’s happy to make. Brogan, a Stillwater, Okla., native studying

psychology at OSU, is now working toward what she hopes will be a permanent spot on the United States Archery Team (USAT). That would allow her to compete in various interna- tional events, including World Cups, World Championships and the Olympic Games. Brogan must fulfill several requirements be- fore that dream becomes reality. One included competing this year in the Arizona Archery Enterprises tournament, where she finished third and was the top U.S. female archer. “So far,” she said, “it’s looking good to be in

USAT for 2017.” Brogan said she has no intention of slowing down. She has shot with people as old as 97 and said, if they can do it, she intends to. “As long as I can shoot,” she said, “healthwise and financially, I will.”
