OAEC launches statewide outage map

he Oklahoma Association of Electric Co- operatives (OAEC) launched an interac- tive statewide outage map accessible at outages.oaec.coop. The map, developed


by Iowa-based web fi rm Global Reach, features re- al-time outage updates from several electric coop- eratives in the state. Refreshed every 15 minutes with new data, the


map provides a breakdown of outages per county as well as per co-op service territory. The map is powered by Google Maps and includes a weather radar layer that can be turned on or off at the user’s choice. “This technology enables OAEC to effi ciently communicate outage information and restoration efforts within co-op circles and to entities such as the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, Oklahoma Emergency Management, emergency-re- sponse organizations as well as to Oklahoma legislators, media professionals and the general public,” Chris Meyers, OAEC general manager, said. As an added advantage, the map will assist OAEC Safety & Loss Control per- sonnel to facilitate mutual aid efforts between electric cooperatives. The Mutual Aid program allows electric cooperatives the opportunity to send line crews and equipment to sister cooperatives that have incurred signifi cant damage due to a natural disaster event. At the map’s launch, 12 electric cooperatives were feeding outages automatically to the statewide map while 15 cooperatives were reporting outages manually. “In time, we hope to reach full outage reporting automation for all of Oklahoma’s distribution electric cooperatives,” Meyers said.

A power surge, or transient voltage, is a sudden and unwanted increase in voltage that can damage, degrade and destroy the sensitive electronic equipment in your home or business.


CAUSES


The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) estimates that 60-80 percent of surges are created when large appliances, like air conditioners, turn on and off. The most powerful surges are caused by lightning.


IMPACT


A spike in voltage can be harmful to electrical devices in your home if the increase is above the device’s intended operating voltage. This creates heat that can damage electrical components.


PROTECT


To protect your electrical equipment from power surges, install outlet surge suppressors throughout your home and a surge protector at your main circuit panel.
