CASTING INNOVATIONS Global Automotive Supplier Receives
Standardized Heat Treating Capabilities In the first half of 2013, a Tier 1
automotive component supplier ap- proached Can-Eng Furnaces Inter- national Ltd., Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, about a major upgrade to its heat treating capabilities. Te supplier had plans to begin global production of lightweight high integrity aluminum automotive structural castings, which would require multiple installations across the globe. “Our customer was looking to expand both in North America as well as Asia,” said Tim Donofrio, vice president, standard and aluminum parts, Can- Eng. “As a Tier 1 supplier, they needed to partner with someone who had the manufacturing and service capabilities in multiple regions. Tere are technical challenges, which are manageable issues to solve. Te geographical concerns, the geopolitical concerns, and language and cultural barriers can be tricky.” Can-Eng designed, manufactured
and installed a high-volume continu- ous heat treatment system for sites in North America and China. Te auto- mated heat treating system included a solution furnace with rapid quench transfer capabilities and artificial aging oven. Te installations include Can-Eng’s Precision Air Quench (PAQ) Technology, which integrates a combination of air handling technolo- gies and computational fluid dynamic modeling which uniformly delivers conditioned quench media. Stan- dardization was a vital aspect of the project so the customer could achieve repeatable and uniform results, while minimizing residual stress. “Te customer needs to have a stan-
dardized system,” Donofrio said. “Tat way, if a technical team in the U.S. is trying to solve a problem related to heat treatment, it can easily collaborate with a technical team in China. Tey are talking about the same equipment and the same processes.” Te systems were installed with Can-
Eng’s Level 2 automation system that integrates product recognition, track- ing and processing parameter historical trending capabilities. Quench parameters
are developed for each component configuration and once validated can be integrated as part of the product recipe. “We also offer ongoing equip- ment support, just as we do with all
