Rio Tinto Alcan Investing $4.5 Million in New Ingot Casting Unit Montreal-based Rio Tinto Alcan
will invest $4.5 million (U.S.) in the Saguenay Lac-Saint-Jean re- gion to install a new small foundry ingot casting unit. This investment reportedly will allow Rio Tinto Alcan to better serve key North
American markets where demand for aluminium has been strong, particularly from the transport and automotive sectors. “This will add 45,000 tons of
value-added small ingot casting capacity. It is an example of our
commitment to our customers at a time when manufacturers are using more and more aluminium to reduce the environmental footprint of their products,” said Étienne Jacques, chief operating officer, Rio Tinto Alcan, Primary Metal North America. Construction work and other
preparations for the new unit are underway, and first production is expected by the third quarter of 2015.
LIFT Opens in Detroit continued from page 9
of Michigan, Ohio State University and EWI, an independent research and development organization based in Columbus, Ohio. LIFT is one of three major federal
manufacturing initiatives that AFS is involved in. Along with LIFT, AFS is a partner in Digital Labs for Manufac- turing and America Makes. Led by UI Labs out of the Chicago area, Digital Lab will bring together manufacturing and software companies, from Boeing to GE, to develop compatible software and hardware for supply chains to reduce manufacturing costs. AFS will work with the other partners at the new Digital Lab to solve century old manufacturing dilemmas while utiliz- ing the most state of the art technol- ogy available with supercomputers and big data. LIFT and Digital Labs are part
of the National Network for Manu- facturing Innovation. America Makes is the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Insti- tute. AFS currently is working with other organizations on the America Makes project, “Accelerated Adop- tion of AM Technology in the American Foundry Industry.” The three federal hubs will con-
nect private businesses with research institutions to advance high tech manufacturing.
