National Shooting Sports Foundation GTW INDUSTRY INSIGHT

presidentof theUnitedStatesofAmerica.National Shooting Sports Foundationpresident andCEOPSteveSaneti looks atwhat thismeans for the guntrade.

R

egardless of themany things he said during the presidential

campaign thatwemight not agree with, orwhich gave us pause,or whichwere stated in an “inartful” fashion,on the issue forwhich hunters, target shooters, collectors, plinkers, the firearms industry and its customersweremost concerned – our individual right to keep and bear arms –DonaldTrump stood steadfast. Te losing party’s platform

promised repeal of the Protection of LawfulCommence inArms Act, the re-enactment of the ineffective so-called “assault weapons”ban, the imposition of nationwide firearms registration to enforce an illusory “universal

background check” for non-retail firearms transfers, a Supreme Court dedicated to overturning the SecondAmendment’s guarantee of an individual right to keep and bear arms, and the imposition of evenmore restrictive gun control regulations by executive order.Tere is now hope for a return to sanity under the new administration. PresidentTrump is one of the

fewNewYorkCity residents to actually have a concealed carry permit. His sons are avid hunters and outdoorsmen. His support of the SecondAmendment during this election cycle never wavered. And he now has the opportunity as President tomake good on his

campaign promises to “respect it 100 per cent.”

SOWHATMIGHTWE HOPE FOR?

One of the first orders of business inmaintaining our vital systemof government checks and balances will be to nominate at least one, and possiblymore, justices to serve on theUS SupremeCourt. MrTrump’s choices, which

must be confirmed with the advice and consent of the Senate, promise to be faithful to the wording of theUSConstitution. Because there will likely be SecondAmendment cases heard by theCourt, which with the late Justice Scalia upheld the Second

Amendment as an individual right to possess a firearmby a single vote, there is hope that it will remain the supreme law of the land. Any attempt to repeal the

Protection of LawfulCommence inArmsAct,which prevents legally baseless lawsuits against manufacturers and sellers of lawfully sold,non-defective firearms, would have to be passed by both houses ofCongress and signed into law by the President. Since both houses are now

controlled by a party whose platformpledges to uphold our rights,we are hopeful that any such repeal efforts will either not pass or be vetoed.
