Another specification absolutely worth knowing about is milliamp hour.Tis is a unit for measuring electric power over time and is commonly used to describe the total amount of energy a battery can store at one time. It is the easiest way to distinguish its strength or capacity. Commonly the mAH ratings

of airsoft batteries range from 600 to 3,000 and sometimes even 8,000.Te higher the mAH,the longer the battery will last. But remember that the higher

the mAH,the bigger the battery will be. So remember not to select a battery only considering its mAH rating but also whether or not it will fi t your gun.


Regardless of whether a battery is tailored specifi cally for airsoft, made for use in a smartphone or just needs to power a humble pocket fl ashlight, the concept of what a battery actually is

remains the same. An electric battery consists

of one or more electrochemical cells with external connections. When a battery is connected to an external circuit, electrolytes are able to move as ions within, allowing the chemical reactions to be completed at the separate terminals, positive and negative, which is how the battery delivers energy to the external circuit. It is the movement of those

ions within the battery that allows current to flow out of it to power devices such as AEGs. Batteries use a wide variety of

chemical solutions to conduct electricity.What’s more, not all chemical solutions used allow them to be recharged time and time again – something we evidently need for our AEGs. Charging times, power

output and other factors also vary depending on the type of chemical solution.Typical battery chemicals include Zinc-Carbon, which is used in standard alkaline batteries. Although other chemical solutions are used for airsoft

as well,Nickel-Cadmium (Ni- Cad),Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) and Lithium-Polymer (Li-Po) are in common use. Ni-MH batteries are the most

common AEG power source available and come standard with most AEG airsoft guns. Tey are reliable, safe to use, have a great capacity and a long recharging life. A disadvantage is that they self-discharge so they lose power even if they are not being used. Compared to Ni-Cad batteries, however,Ni-MH batteries tend to be more compact and lighter for the same performance. With all the advantages of

Ni-MH batteries, why do airsoft players choose Ni-Cad batteries? Compared to Ni-MH they tend to be larger and heavier.Te advantage of Ni-Cad batteries, however, is that they are quicker to (dis)charge and are better for AEGs that use a large amount of energy with high rates of fi re. Beware that overcharging Ni-

Cad batteries, even only once, can utterly destroy them and even cause fire.Terefore they

should never be left unattended when charging. Li-Po batteries are the most

costly, yet are among the most advanced available.Tey are only suited for AEGs that are able to take the impressive rate of fire that these batteries produce. Li-Po batteries are not aff ected by extremes of temperature but tend to have the longest charge time compared with the others. However, one really has to

know what they are working with because overcharging Li-Po batteries will result in explosion and fi re.


As each battery is different, there aren’t any general rules that apply to charging them. To avoid overcharging batteries it is wise to invest in a smart charger featuring peak detection and an automatic cut-off . Taking the guesswork out

of charging, a good smart charger keeps batteries in prime condition and gives your batteries a maximum charge each and every time.
