Dark Rides

Why IP is good for business It has not always been smooth sailing. Economic conditions and world affairs have created bumps in the road along the way; they are always painful but also always great learning experiences and I am pleased to report our business has more than doubled in the past few years and things are not slowing down anytime soon. One of the keys to Sally’s success has been our relationship with certain intellectual properties (IP). Our Justice League attractions are a prime example of the power of IP. Last year we introduced a Walking Dead dark ride concept and past successes with well-known properties like School-day and the Looney Toons are also good examples. Certainly virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) will play a role in future dark ride experiences, however, I think virtual reality will continue to be more popular on rollercoasters than on dark rides. Augmented reality experiences, like Pokémon Go, are a whole different

story but it’s far too early to tell the technology’s impact in dark rides. Certainly the incorporation of media into the physical dark ride experience has been revolutionary. Moving from practical sets and special effects into 3D virtual experiences has been great fun and is something that is here to stay. With all that said however, dark rides are still an art form more than they are technological marvels. Their roots were in the creative minds of local park owners, and built as homemade experiences until complete attractions like the pretzel ride and Laff in the Dark became popular. Things that worked well in the dark rides of old still work well now, and that is why you will find quick scares, falling boxes, charging trucks, loud horns, bright lights, smoke, fog and even fire in Sally’s dark rides today. After all, dark rides are more than 100 years old
in our industry, so it safe to say they are here to stay.
