BENNO’S GREAT RACE Ferrari World Abu Dhabi

A

lready home to dark rides including the factory tour Made in Maranello and Speed of Magic 4D, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi (FWAD)

launched a new family-friendly attraction this spring featuring its mascot Benno the mouse. Benno's Great Race is a heavily-themed interactive

dark ride featuring a mix of physical props and media content in which riders complete a series of tasks using an wrench. The ride features 11 trackless Mystic Mover vehicles by ETF Ride Systems, which plot a course through the attraction including four dead ends. Supplied by Alterface Projects, the interactive system

assigns a colour to each rider (up to five per car), as they use their wrench to cut a cobweb, catch bees, assemble their own Ferrari and ignite fireworks in the grand finale. Media content (video) ride was provide by Pure Imagination Studios of Los Angeles and is played out across five screens. In total the ride lasts around seven minutes. “It’s a beautiful combination of physical sets and video media where players use the wrench differently on every scene to achieve funny tasks,” observes Guillaume Gallant at Alterface Projects. “It’s really cute.”

Dubai dark ride capital of the Middle East?

Movie parks are a hotbed for a dark rides and media- based attractions. Considering that Dubai has two such parks opening this October (Motiongate and Bollywood Parks Dubai), not to mention numerous other recent park projects, all of which have a strong indoor element (for obvious weather-related reasons) and it should come as no surprise to learn that the Emirate is about to become the dark ride capital of the Middle East. Unless anyone knows different that is, but we suspect not. One beneficiary of this trend is the Dutch supplier ETF Ride Systems, which has picked up no fewer than 10 projects both here and in neighbouring Abu Dhabi. At Hub-Zero, opened in Dubai back in May, the company supplied vehicles for two interactive dark rides. Both Battlefield and Resident Evil are media- based attractions based on ETF's trackless Mystic Mover system and come complete with interactive shooting technology by Alterface Projects. Slated to open at the end of this month, IMG Worlds of Adventure will also feature an interactive dark ride from ETF/Alterface. Then, in late October, Dubai Parks and Resorts will open its gates to the public, comprising the Bollywood and Motiongate parks alongside Legoland Dubai. At Bollywood Parks, ETF has supplied a ride system alongside interactive specialist Triotech, while at Motiongate the Dutch company has installed four transport systems, one of them in collaboration with Alterface Projects, with which it recently became a majority shareholder. ETF will provide the ride vehicles to further dark rides over the coming 12 months in the

Middle East, Stockholm, a major European park to be confirmed and Legoland Discovery Centres in Shanghai, Michigan and Arizona. One of the attractions at Motiongate Dubai, we can

reveal, will be the world’s first Ghostbusters-branded theme park ride. Inspired by the original movies rather than the recent remake, Ghostbusters: Battle for New York is an interactive trackless dark ride featuring 'Ecto-Pod' vehicles by ETF and scenes brought to life using projection mapping technology. Armed with a ghost-blasting proton pack, passengers/players are inducted as honorary Ghostbuster with one goal - to exterminate Slimer, Gozer the Destructor, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and other sinister beings. Though not a typical dark ride, it's also worth mentioning that Bollywood Parks Dubai will feature two 4D immersive tunnels courtesy of Holovis Attractions. Each will feature a 30-seat ride vehicles on a short track that leaves the loading bay and goes into the action zone, where passengers are immersed in media content from all sides as the physical themed world is merged seamlessly with the virtual world. Holovis HiFiniti spatial audio will further enhance the experience. The IP featured in each attraction has still yet to be confirmed, but as with all other attractions at Dubai Parks and Resorts they will open on October 31.
