B&M's 100th coaster
debuts at Cedar Point The self-proclaimed “Roller Coaster Capital of the World" has just opened its 18th coaster. Standing 223 feet (68m) above the midway at Cedar Point, Valravn is the world's tallest, longest and fastest Dive Coaster – and the 100th ride worldwide for the revered Swiss supplier Bolliger and Mabillard (B&M). Paul Ruben reports from Sandusky, Ohio

n common with other B&M Dive Coasters, Valravn features a signature hold and dive element after passengers have crested the lift hill. Then, as the train
pauses for 4 seconds before dropping, those on board are able to stare straight down at the journey before them. After the train is released, diving at 90° into the 214ft-long (65m) drop, riders reach a top speed of 75 mph (121 km/h) as they race through elements including a 165ft-tall Immelmann, a 131ft second drop, a dive loop, 270° roll and airtime hill. “Valravn is a great addition to the line up of world class
rollercoasters at Cedar Point,” believes the park's vice- president and general manager, Jason McClure. "The dive coaster characteristics – three rows of eight riders and the hold brake before the 90° straight down dive – differentiate Valravn from the other experiences here at the Roller Coaster Capital of the World.” The multi-million dollar attraction comes complete with
three 24-passenger floorless coaches featuring over-the- shoulder restraints and interlocking seat belts. During a ride lasting around two minutes, they roll over more than a kilometre (1,041m/3415ft) of copper-coloured track with silver highlights, supported by columns painted regal blue. “The riding experience has exceeded our expectations,”
confirms McClure, adding that “Valravn continues our legacy of world-class rollercoasters at Cedar Point. It is the tallest, longest and fastest dive coaster in the world, but longest is what really makes the impact. The additional inversion in the form of a 270° roll, along with the airtime hill at the end of the ride are the elements that separate Valravn from other dive coasters." Feedback so far from Cedar Point guests has been
fantastic, reports McClure, who identifies the top of the lift hill 10 world records
