Editor’s note T
Heatwaves signal a turning point for UK cooling
his summer’s heatwaves have again exposed the UK’s growing vulnerability to extreme temperatures. From hotels managing guest comfort to public buildings struggling with ageing infrastructure,
cooling is no longer a seasonal convenience but a core component of climate adaptation. Across this issue, contributors highlight how the sector must respond with smarter, more effi cient and more holistic approaches to HVAC.
Carrier’s Matt Maleki argues that decarbonisation and guest experience are not opposing forces, but mutually reinforcing goals when indoor air quality, system design and building performance are considered together. Daikin’s Steve Molloy examines what a national retrofi t programme for schools, hospitals and care homes would require, following the CCC’s call for greater investment in cooling. Climate Centre’s Dean Skerratt explores why a surge in online searches for air conditioning refl ects a shiſt from reactive buying to long-term planning.
In commercial projects, exposed-ceiling design trends are reshaping fan coil requirements, with Diff usion’s Alexis Roberts outlining the need for units built specifi cally for these environments. And as energy effi ciency pressures intensify, Klima-T erm’s Andrew Latus explains how next-generation AHUs will be defi ned by heat recovery, tighter construction standards and intelligent controls.
In other news, the ACR News Awards are now open for entries, recognising innovation at a time when the industry’s role has never been more critical.
