the course. Once qualifi ed, she became an installation engineer in domestic properties. “In 2015 I fell pregnant with my son,” Carly said. “It was during this time that I learnt how to repair boilers as I couldn’t continue with the heavy lifting needed on the installation side. I worked up until 37 weeks pregnant repairing boilers!

“In 2022 I took the Field Services Engineer job at Baxi as I wanted to progress my technical knowledge and become a better breakdown engineer.”

“Carly was exceptional from the start,” said Gareth Hassall, Director from STS. “She was determined to do well on the course, and to keep

improving, even when faced with unfamiliar skills and new challenges. She asked questions, took our feedback on board, and looked for

ways to build her confi dence and competence beyond the requirements of the programme.” It was the positive infl uence she had on the younger women learning alongside her that most impressed staff at STS. Gareth again: “Carly could easily have relied on her existing knowledge and experience. Instead, she approached her training with the mindset of a true professional, embracing every opportunity to learn, develop and challenge herself… She was open to sharing her own experiences, providing motivation and demonstrating that women have an important and growing role to play in the future of the industry.” It’s not just in the classroom where Carly acts as a role model for other women considering a career in green skills and building services. Through content she has created for Baxi, alongside her own TikTok, Facebook and Instagram channels, she promotes the industry in a positive and accessible way, sharing her experiences with honesty and enthusiasm.

“I often get asked what struggles I have faced as a woman in the trades. After 21 years, I can honestly say that for me, being a woman hasn’t been an issue,” said Carly. “Occasionally, some people have made unfair assumptions about my competence, but I have learnt to change opinions in a positive way. “The main issues have been around getting suitable women’s workwear, and I have been on building sites where there are no female facilities, but these issues are becoming a thing of the past. In the last couple of years in particular, I have noticed positive change.” The Women in Skills Bootcamp, Cheshire &

Warrington is focused on opening up building services to women, who are still extremely underrepresented in the sector. Amanda Colclough, Assistant Quality

& Operations Manager for Cheshire & Warrington, who was at STS when Carly received her award, said: “Through the Women in Skills Bootcamp Carly embraced every opportunity, progressed into a specialist role and is now a fantastic ambassador for women in

engineering and green skills!” Away from work: Carly enjoys keeping fi t and hiking.
