AIR CONDITIONING
decarbonisation blueprint for hospitality; every building is diff erent, and Carrier has design teams in place to support all building types. Some hotels occupy modern developments. Others operate from historic buildings that have evolved over decades, with layers of infrastructure hidden behind walls, ceilings and risers. The practicalities of implementing change can therefore vary enormously from one property to another. This means successful decarbonisation rarely begins with equipment selection. It begins with understanding the building, which is where our teams can add value. A considered strategy will examine how heating, cooling, hot water, ventilation and controls currently interact, what equipment remains fi t for purpose and where future opportunities exist. It does not have to mean stripping out and replacing everything at once. A planned series of phased upgrades can manage investment and minimise guest disruption while moving the hotel towards its long-term goals. Decarbonisation should be approached as a carefully planned journey rather than a single project.
Thinking beyond today’s energy bills It’s one thing to focus on capital expenditure when evaluating investment decisions, but operational expenditure often tells a diff erent story. Heating, cooling and hot water can account for most of a hotel’s energy consumption. HVAC decisions therefore have consequences beyond utility bills. A system that performs
effi ciently and reliably can reduce maintenance requirements, lower energy costs and minimise operational disruption, while consistently delivering comfortable, healthy environments.
Poorly performing systems often generate hidden costs, including guest complaints, service recovery measures, discounted stays and lost repeat business. Hospitality operators therefore need to think diff erently about investment. It is not simply a question of replacing equipment because it has reached the end of its life or choosing the lowest capital cost. It’s about understanding the long-term relationship between capital investment and operational performance. Perhaps more than ever, hotels should consider HVAC systems as long-term investments rather than short-term expenditures. The hospitality sector cannot know precisely how legislation, technology and guest expectations will evolve over the next twenty years. What it can do is plan. The operators that begin developing robust, phased decarbonisation strategies today are likely to discover that reducing carbon emissions and creating exceptional guest experiences are not competing priorities at all. More often than not, they are outcomes of the same strategy. And when guests leave without ever mentioning the heating, cooling or hot water, there is a good chance the building is performing exactly as it should.
"There is an enduring perception that reducing emissions comes at the expense of comfort, resilience or aff ordability."
