CASE STUDY Boosting effi ciency

This case study from Climalife demonstrates transforming cooling systems with adiabatic atomisation.

W hilst looking to install a new CO2 freezer and chill

store at its production facility, a national high street bakery wanted to relocate some of its

existing refrigeration equipment, that had been running on R-449A but had not been fulfi lling the load requirements because of its direct exposure to sunlight. The existing condensers often experienced ambient

temperatures in excess of +45°C during hot weather resulting in the refrigeration equipment to operate ineffi ciently. As part of the project review, engineering consultants MBA had recommended the chillBooster from Carel to tackle the

temperature challenge on both the R449A and new CO2 systems. Wirral-based Brooktherm Refrigeration’s technical design department was invited to design and manage the installation project. In order to provide the condenser with additional cooling to

ensure operation was maintained, a temporary cooling solution by way of a hose, had been in use on the R-449A refrigeration systems, however a more long-term reliable solution was sought. The temporary solution was making it diffi cult for the previous service contractor to maintain the system and meant frequent visits were required during high ambient situations. The chillBooster is an adiabatic atomiser that uses evaporative cooling to cool the air before it is used by the condensing units, such as chillers or dry coolers. The atomisation of sprayed water in micrometric droplets favours spontaneous evaporation which takes away part of the thermal energy from the surrounding air, lowering its temperature. Bringing air close to its wet bulb temperature means that during summer, its temperature is lowered by approximately 10°C to 15°C which gives a consequent reduction of the workload required from the condensing unit and therefore energy savings in electric kW. The benefi t of this type of system over adiabatic cooling

from the condenser manufacturers is that for existing systems, it is easy to navigate and select parts as well as size and install.

Two chillBoosters, consisting of over 90 parts, were ordered from Climalife. The Climalife team ensured all parts were thoroughly checked and delivered correctly, demonstrating reliability and ability to manage complexity seamlessly for the customer. The R-449A system was successfully

moved in August 2024, with the chillBooster system itself being straightforward to install on both this and the CO2

system. One year on, the summer months have truly tested the eff ectiveness of this

enhanced cooling mechanism, performing eff ectively throughout the hot weather. The Brooktherm design team confi rmed there have been no call outs since the chillBooster was introduced and is very happy with the positive results.
