Clivet transforms 1844 rural home
The fi rst Clivet EDGE PRO installation in the UK is demonstrating the potential for heat pumps in challenging rural retrofi ts, replacing a 40kW LPG boiler with a correctly specifi ed 16kW R290 heat pump in an historic Lincolnshire home.
"Despite the age and complexity of the property, the retrofi t required minimal changes to the heating emitters. Using the ‘minimal disrupt’
approach, only three of the 19 radiators needed
replacing." T
he installation has been completed at Gorse Cottage near Boston, the home of Simon Wardle and Diane Saunders of Ultimate Renewables Supplies, Clivet’s sole UK
distributor. Parts of Gorse Cottage date back to 1844, with later extensions creating a fi vebedroom, multigenerational property that includes a twobedroom annex. The previous heating system comprised a 40kW LPG boiler
and large storage tank. However, roombyroom calculations showed a true design heat loss of just 14.58kW. This allowed the new system to be correctly specifi ed with a 16kW Clivet EDGE PRO, a clear demonstration of why accurate heatloss assessment matters, rather than simply matching a heat pump to the output of the boiler it replaces. The Clivet EDGE PRO is an R290 reversible airtowater monobloc heat pump designed for highperformance residential applications and particularly suited to retrofi t. Using natural R290 refrigerant, it delivers water temperatures up to 80°C, achieves A+++ heating effi ciency at 35°C, and operates in outdoor conditions down to –25°C. It provides heating, cooling and domestic hot water from a single system, with lownoise operation tailored for residential use.
Minimal disruption Despite the age and complexity of the property, the retrofi t required minimal changes to the heating emitters. Using the
‘minimal disrupt’ approach, only three of the 19 radiators needed replacing.
The installation also included Clivet Adia Zero Disrupt, a
300litre Supercoil cylinder and a wholehouse booster pump, all housed within a purposebuilt insulated external plant room. As an off gasgrid property switching from LPG to a heat pump,
the project qualifi ed for the enhanced £9,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.
The timing is signifi cant for rural households reliant on
delivered fuels. Simon and Diane had spent around £5,500 on LPG since October, and early operation of the EDGE PRO indicates substantial cost savings. Moving away from LPG also reduces exposure to fossilfuel price volatility and gives the household greater control over future energy costs. For Simon, the installation carries additional weight. Working within Ultimate Renewables Supplies places him at the centre of the UK heat pump sector, with extensive experience in system design and performance. Gorse Cottage challenges several persistent misconceptions: that older homes are unsuitable for heat pumps, that every radiator must be replaced, or that a large boiler automatically requires a large heat pump. An 1844 property. A 40kW LPG boiler replaced by a 16kW heat pump. Only three radiators changed. And the fi rst Clivet EDGE PRO installed in the UK. Clivet cites this as a clear demonstration of what good system design can achieve when paired with the right technology.
