AIR CONDITIONING
building as a single thermal zone, which matters in structures where orientation and use vary considerably from room to room. Heat recovery variants add a further layer of value in mixed- use buildings such as hospitals, where some zones (e.g. a kitchen or a server room) may require cooling throughout the year while wards and offi ces need heating. Rather than rejecting heat from one zone and generating it separately for another, these systems redistribute energy between zones, improving overall effi ciency and reducing the additional electrical load that a retrofi t programme places on the site. The industry’s continuing shift toward lower-GWP refrigerants such as R-32 also supports the wider decarbonisation goals that sit alongside adaptation in the CCC’s recommendations.
Optimising real-world performance It’s important to remember that specifi cation is only the fi rst part of the challenge, as controls and commissioning determine whether a well-designed system actually delivers the resilience intended. Systems that are correctly sized but poorly controlled can still leave occupants too hot or too cold, and optimised controls now allow facilities teams to identify underperformance and adjust strategy before problems reach the occupied space. For public sector clients managing large, disparate estates with constrained maintenance budgets, this kind of remote visibility is likely to become as important as the mechanical specifi cation itself.
Workforce capability deserves equal attention. As VRV and heat pump technology becomes more widespread across the public estate, maintenance providers and their technicians need to be properly trained on the specifi c equipment installed, particularly where services are subcontracted. Reversible technologies off er a way to address both objectives from a single piece of plant, but only where fabric, electrical infrastructure, controls and maintenance are considered together, from the earliest stages of any retrofi t programme, rather than treated as separate workstreams operating in isolation.
