he Environmental Hero of the Year award was presented to Craig Girdlestone of Danston Technical Services, recognising a year of work that has delivered meaningful,
sectorshaping progress in sustainable cooling. Based in Central and East Africa throughout 2025, Girdlestone has championed lowGWP and natural refrigerant technologies while helping to strengthen coldchain resilience for food, medicine and essential goods. His contribution to Africa’s new Environmental Test Centre has supported government programmes and expanded local technical capability, and his mentoring of young engineers is helping to build the region’s next generation of sustainable cooling specialists. His impact is both practical and lasting.
