Stephen Benton Sponsored by Bitzer

Alan Moor Award

T

he Alan Moor Award honours the memory of the late former managing director of Bitzer UK. The award is

presented each year to an individual whose contribution to the air conditioning and refrigeration industry has been substantial yet often overlooked. This year, the accolade went to Stephen Benton, a fi gure whose infl uence is felt quietly but fi rmly through the sector. Steve’s career refl ects the values the award

was created to recognise. A downtoearth and deeply experienced refrigeration engineer, he has built his reputation on steady, meticulous work carried out without fanfare. As Coowner

and Director of his own company, he has spent decades supporting the industry through handson training, consultancy and guidance on standards compliance. His expertise is particularly recognised in the safe use of hydrocarbons, A2Ls and CO₂ systems, areas where clarity and competence are essential. His technical insight extends far beyond daytoday practice. Steve contributes to several key committees, including BSI RHE/18, CEN TC 182 WG6 for EN378 and the Pressure Equipment Consultation Forum. Through this work, he has helped shape the standards and safety frameworks that underpin modern

refrigeration and air conditioning practice, and many of the documents and procedures relied upon across the industry today refl ect his input. Steve began his career as a timeserved

apprentice, learning through doing, questioning, reading and, as he jokes, the occasional Google search. That curiosity has remained a constant thread, matched by a commitment to fairness and a genuine love of refrigeration. Away from work, he enjoys family life and is well known for taking EN Standards home as bedtime reading. This year’s award recognises a career defi ned not by visibility, but by impact.
