REFRIGERANTSFANS Key Findings:

■ Operation & Effi ciency: RS-20 performed closely to R134a in all tested engine revolutions (750, 2000, and 4000 rpm).

■Performance in High Heat: Even under challenging 40ºC summer conditions, RS-20 provided effi cient cooling. While slightly lower than R134a, the diff erence is negligible for typical users.

■Low Pressure Ratios: The study noted that RS-20 main- tained lower operating pressures in some scenarios, which can help extend the life of the compressor.

After conducting the test and collecting all the data, it can be observed that the RS-20 refrigerant gas performs at similar conditions to R134a in a cooling system that was originally designed for R134a. While exceptionally well-suited for automotive A/C, RS-20 (R480A) is not restricted to the automotive sector. It is suitable for a broad range of high and medium-temperature applications where R134a has long been the standard: ■ Commercial Refrigeration: Supermarket display cases and vending machines.

■Refrigerated Transport: Transport refrigeration units. ■Industrial Chillers: Screw and scroll compressors. ■Cold Storage: Small-to-medium cold storage facilities.

The future of R134a retrofi tting The transition away from high-GWP refrigerants is no longer a future goal; it is a present reality. While 1234yf will continue to occupy the new equipment market, the future of the vast, installed base of R134a equipment lies in non-fl ammable, low- GWP blends.

RS-20 (R480A) provides the industry with a “best of both worlds” solution: it allows for immediate, cost-eff ective retrofi tting and compliance with impending environmental regulations, all while keeping technicians and consumers safe with an A1-rated, non-fl ammable fl uid. As we look towards 2026 and beyond, RS-20 stands out as the ultimate ‘drop-in’ champ.

"For many existing

applications, particularly in commercial refrigeration and older vehicle fl eets, using a fl ammable refrigerant presents signifi cant safety,

regulatory, and

retrofi tting challenges."
