Franchise Focus Hitting the big time

Minster Cleaning Services franchisee James Lofthouse becomes the fi rst member of the £2million Club

INVESTMENT LEVEL: FROM £28,225 J

ust a month after being the fi rst Minster franchisee to reach annual sales of £2million at his Sheffi eld branch, James Lofthouse has been named the 2016 Minster Cleaning Services Franchisee of the Year. He received the award together with the inaugural Minster £2million Club award at the company’s annual conference held at the Brandon Hall Hotel and Spa on the outskirts of Coventry. Franchisee of the Year runner up was David Charlton in Liverpool; third place went to Rob Wilson in Essex. There were also awards for high levels of growth for the Hull and South Wales branches.

“Whether prospective franchisees go for a resale or choose a new area, the company offers a safe and secure future”

Managing director Mike Parker says: “These annual awards recognise people who have made outstanding achievements

during the year. They are based on a range of performance criteria, including sales, new business acquisition and customer retention. By following Minster’s proven business model, which has stood the test of time for 35 years, all of our franchisees have the opportunity to create a large and valuable business. “We have a very strong network and our franchisees are excellent people-managers, which is key to a management franchise like ours. It is the quality of our franchisees that has made us into the country’s biggest and the most successful cleaning franchise. Since franchising was identifi ed as the route for sustained growth through a network of committed individuals, annual turnover has grown exponentially. The top 10 branches are averaging annual sales in excess of £1.6million and annual turnover for the group is approaching £40million.” James bought his Sheffi eld franchise as a going concern in 2005 following a career in various management roles. He says that he now has the best of both worlds with Minster: “I run my own business and yet I am not on my own. Minster’s support covers a wide range of areas including IT, accounting and marketing as well as complex areas like health and safety and employment law; this leaves franchisees

free to concentrate on looking after customers and providing them with a fi rst-class service. “Offi ce cleaning is an essential service based on repeat custom and we have a diverse customer base with a large number of contracts. This helps to protect us from the peaks and troughs experienced by so many businesses and Minster’s large territories give us enormous potential for expansion.”

Like James, most of Minster’s recent franchisees have joined through the purchase of an established branch and all have made signifi cant positive impacts on the businesses they bought. In just fi ve years, Kevin Lawley more than trebled turnover at his Norfolk and Suff olk branch from £420,000 to £1.4million. His business now has about 170 contracts and around 180 employees.

Minster is a leading force in offi ce cleaning; it was established in 1982 and has been a full member of the British Franchise Association since 1992. Whether prospective franchisees go for a resale or choose a new area, the company off ers a safe and secure future.

On average, franchisees have been with Minster for 13 years and some longer- serving franchisees are planning to retire in the next few years. There is currently a resale available in Derbyshire. Please contact Minster for further details. New Minster franchise opportunities include Cambridge, Doncaster, Durham, Leicester, London, Middlesex, Guildford, Peterborough and Swansea. Initial startup cost for a Minster franchise is from £28,225 plus vat. This fee covers your licence, training, computer hardware, stationery, machinery, equipment and materials. In addition, between £40,000 and £60,000 working capital will be needed – fi nance is available from leading banks subject to status.
