Franchise Q&A Ask the

experts David Glover

Franchise recruitment manager, Caremark

Q: Do I need experience of the sector before I invest in a franchise?

A: No, not necessarily, but this will depend on the individual business. Most franchisors off er comprehensive training, usually at the start of the new franchisee’s life, and then ongoing support and guidance, which can be given through face-to-face meetings, via telephone contact or through group meetings and workshops. For some franchises it is preferable to have management experience, as the franchisee will be building and leading a team who will be integral to the business. For others it is having a fi nancial or business background, while some look for good customer service skills and a practical, hands-on approach. What is equally important is having the

necessary drive, passion and determination to succeed in the chosen sector and build a sustainable business. This means a commitment on behalf of the franchisee to ‘own’ the business and be in the driving seat each day.

Running your own business is exciting and, for some, the fulfi lment of long-held dreams, sometimes in an industry far removed from their initial career path. So if you are keen to be the master of your own future and have the ambition, passion and drive to succeed, there is no reason why inexperience within your sector of interest should necessarily be a deterrent to initial enquiries.
