The fight is female
A
s a female editor steering a male editorial team, it has been interesting putting the May issue together – especially an issue so
focused on women in business. During many discussions about how far we have come in the workplace, it made me think about all the inspirational women I have met in my education and career to date, as well as successful female CEOs, award-winning actresses, and Nobel Prize winners. It also made me realise there’s still a long way to go. A report from market research agency Childwise found that the gender pay gap begins as early as our childhood, with girls being paid £2.20 a week less in pocket money than boys. What’s more, a study by GirlGuiding found that, while 90 per cent of girls aged nine or 10 think both genders have equal chances of succeeding in their chosen job, just 35 per cent of women aged 17 to 21 feel the same. We’re living through a major flash point in politics (President Trump) in the ongoing effort to secure women’s equality, and the British Franchise Association (bfa) are supporting these efforts in its own way by showing how running a franchise can
help a woman feel empowered. Talking on the subject, Pip Wilkins, chief executive at the bfa, said: “I think it’s so important to empower women in business, the franchising industry has helped so many women build their confidence to succeed, and provide the flexibility they need to fit around families or personal commitments.” If you turn to page 31, you can read our interview with a selection of women who have invested in their career and become their own boss through franchising. And, if you’re a woman (or a man) looking to invest in a franchise, head to page 19 for the six-page preview to The British Franchise Exhibition in Manchester on 16 and 17 June. Here, people of all ages and genders can meet face-to-face with like- minded entrepreneurs to discuss business. I’ll leave you with the words of Malala
Yousafzai: “There are two powers in the world; one is the sword and the other is the pen. There is a third power stronger than both, that of women.”
