46. Model verification is the process of adjusting model outputs to improve the consistency of modelling results with respect to available monitored data. In this assessment, model uncertainty was minimised following Defra (Defra 2009) and EPUK (EPUK 2010) guidance. Verification of the DMRB model was not undertaken as part of the air quality assessment for the PEI, as monitoring data from across the study area was not available for use in the assessment.

47.

Oxides of nitrogen (NOx) concentrations were predicted using the DMRB model. The modelled road contribution of NOx at the identified receptor locations was then converted to NO2 using the NOx to NO2 calculator (v3.2) (Defra 2012), in accordance with Defra guidance (Defra 2009).

48.

The DMRB assessment requires the derivation of background pollutant concentration data that are factored to the year of assessment, to which contributions from the assessed roads are added. Background NOx, NO2 and PM10 concentrations were therefore obtained for the 1km x 1km grid squares covering the proposed East Anglia THREE project area and receptor locations for 2012. To provide a conservative assessment, 2012 background concentrations were used for all 2018 scenarios.
