ACTION YOU CAN TAKE To improve your communication acumen, improve your communication situation awareness: - Pay attention to the rate of speed at which someone talks and the words they use. Mirror their speed and echo their type of words. That demonstrates respect for them and their opinions. They are more likely to return that respect.


- Take notice of how they approach you — tentatively or confidently? You can then respond accordingly.


- If you are unsure of how you are perceived, ask a colleague to let you know when you come across as unpleasant, stubborn, frustrated or even cooperative. In short, raising your situational awareness to include


your thoughts and behaviors, and the actions of others, will increase trust, respect and collaboration in your department. It will also improve safety and innovation, and quite possibly your bottom line.


TO SUMMARIZE Your communication manner is one of the most visible pieces of your character. It is the second impression you share of your character and is a critical part of your character. Remember — it is also based on the other person’s perception of your character. Do you communicate respect for the other person’s ideas and values? Or do your words invoke defensive reactions as in the fight or flight? How do you want to be known — as a leader who takes care of their direct reports, or one who is looking for the limelight for themselves? What are you doing to reinforce that image or
