JUDGES’ COMMENTS: UTour Group is aiming to become the most reputable outbound travel agency in China. Its comprehensive international service platform provides a one-stop shop for customers.


The judges said: “Experiencing extraordinary growth in the last two years, this is an Interesting business with an interesting future. “It has a clear strategy and vision for the future.”

JUDGES’ COMMENTS: Yigit Yigiter, Chief Executive of virtual reality app Timelooper, won in recognition of how


the innovation helps tourists “travel back in time”.


Timelooper is an app that combines augmented and virtual reality to enhance travellers’ experiences. The app can bring additional levels of “edutainment” to destinations around the world. It uses geolocation in smartphones to trigger a virtual reality video featuring that exact spot during a time of historic importance. The judges said: “This innovation can fundamentally change the way a destination is experienced by engaging people past and present.”


WINNER: GLH HOTELS NOMINATED BY: TRAVOLUTION UK JUDGES’ COMMENTS: glh, the largest owner operator of hotels in London, has started the fightback among conventional hoteliers against powerful disruptors in the hospitality sector such as Airbnb.


It has launched a new concept in online hotel room sales and marketing, www. chooseyourownroom.com, and implemented a hotel operations concept likely to be copied by many. ‘Radical Hosting’ is


effectively personalisation for the hotel sector, combining artificial and human intelligence to give the customer a high level of customer service. This will see hotels develop much more useful in-property and web- based concierge services, personalised room features, and extend the range of add-on services. The WTM World Travel Leaders


Awards judges said: “This is a clever idea but also an obvious one with hotels finally catching up with airlines and train bookings.”


WINNER: DUBAI PARKS & RESORTS NOMINATED BY: TTN MIDDLE EAST JUDGES’ COMMENTS: Dubai Parks and Resorts is set to become the Middle East’s largest integrated theme park resort following the opening in October 2016 of a 25-million square foot development. It features more than 100 rides and attractions spread across three theme parks and one water park, linked by an entertainment, retail and dining district, and a family hotel.


The judges said: “This stunning initiative will reposition Dubai as the destination for family tourism, focusing on giving visitors the best experience through smart technology.”

In recent years, impressive growth has come through the addition of ancillaries such as travel insurance and attraction tickets, and it is now on a mission to become a one-stop shop for every ‘holiday extra’.


It is helping travel agents to


capture more of their customers’ spend and making life easier for the end consumer.


Its biggest change in the next year will be through the rapid growth of car hire, which it launched last year and which it sees as the final part of its jigsaw. The judges said: “Holiday Extras is a simple, clever and impressive business that keeps on growing. It is widely admired by getting its priorities right with strong customer service.”
