Italy

In an extract taken from a recent speech by the Vice Director of Italy’s regulator, AAMS, Alessandro Aronica explained that a market report into Italy’s AWP sector in 2006, detailed analytical data in which revenues generated by street gaming machines amounted to €43.5bn. However, the ‘official’ collection of revenues from AWP gaming machines in that same year totalled €15.4bn, with the difference between the two figures (€28.1bn) the scale of the “infiltration of the legal and illegal gaming market by the mafia.” Mr. Aronica disclosed that while the number of AWPs has effectively doubled in Italy since 2006 (rising from 200,000 in the last 10 years to 400,000), an accurate figure for the revenue increase from AWPs over the decade is almost impossible to estimate due to the scale of illegal operations.
