Despite news that Austria's competition commission has put a roadblock in front of Novomatic's acquisition of Casinos Austria with partner Saska, the internal restructuring of subsidiary, Casinos Austria International (CAI) has put resulted in an operating profit of €19m, the first since 2009.


In the first six months of 2016, CAI took a further considerable step in improving its results and was able to raise its earnings performance significantly. With revenues of €65.1m, the group posted a positive operating result of €18.9m, compared to €4.1m in the same period in 2015. Tis includes an extraordinary one-off effect in Hungary: after the successful renewal of the license for the very profitable casino in Sopron, a new partner was brought on board. Tis generated a revaluation income of €15.2m, which is offset in the financial results by a deconsolidation loss of €10.9m.


After a long period of intense restructuring and change, CAI succeeded in the first six months of 2016 in bringing its consolidated operating results back into the black for the first time


Playtech Sports strengthens senior management team

Playtech Sports has significantly strengthened its management team with a trio of senior appointments ahead of a number of large-scale Playtech ONE projects and recent acquisitions including leading sports software provider Best Gaming Technology (BGT).


Richard Andrew has joined Playtech Sports as Chief Operating Officer (COO) from Te Hong Kong Jockey Club; Danny Angus has joined as Chief Technical Officer (CTO) from OpenBet; Eoin Redmond will join Playtech Sports from Paddy Power Betfair on October 1 as Sportsbook Product Director; while Peter Greberg has been appointed as Technical Director and leader of Malmo operations.

Te slight drop in revenues from 67.5 to 65.1 million euros can also be attributed to Casino Sopron. Adjusted for this one-time transaction, revenues were maintained at the 2015 level. Te main drivers of the continued improvement were the operations in Switzerland (+ 0.6 million euros) and Canada (+ 0.5 million euros) as well as the VLT operations in Macedonia, which contributed first returns of 0.3 million euros. Te casinos in Australia, Germany and Hungary also continued to develop very positively. All CAI operations have now been posting positive operating results since the beginning of 2014, and positive consolidated results are once again expected for 2016.


Ian Chuter, who joined Playtech in October last year as a strategic advisor, will leave the business on October 31st to join the newly merged Ladbrokes-Coral business as COO – Digital.

‘Phenomenal month-on-month growth’ from the Asian VIP gaming sector has seen Tigre De Cristal in Russia’s Primorsky Krai region, post a net profit of US$219,100 for its first six months. Te company who owns 60 per cent of the casino, Summit Ascent Holdings, revealed that this time last year it made a loss of $5.6m. Te casino has been operating an average of 23 mass gaming tables, up to 14 VIP tables and 319 slots. Rolling chip turnover increased from $33.2m in Tigre’s first month of operation in November to $257.8m in July increasing to $283.6m for August. Summit stated: “Our strategy has been to start our rolling chip business using only casual junkets initially without fixed- room operators. Tis strategy is deemed necessary in order to preserve the bargaining power of the casino vis-a-vis fixed- room operators. Tus far, our strategy has been proven to be correct.”
