FOCUS ON WEATHER MONITORING 33 New partnership offers real-world safety benefi ts to the wind turbine sector

Meteorological equipment specialists Biral has been working closely with ORE Catapult to further develop its BTD- 350 thunderstorm and lightning detection system for offshore wind farms and is installing its technology for testing at the Catapult’s 7MW Levenmouth Demonstration Turbine in Fife.

ORE Catapult was established in 2013 by the UK Government and is part of a network of Catapults set up by Innovate UK in high growth industries. It is the UK’s leading innovation centre for offshore renewable energy.

Biral’s innovative technology provides operators with advanced, real-time information about thunderstorm activity within a 50 nautical mile radius of a wind farm.

Thunderstorm and lightning detection has historically required large and expensive networks of radio receivers or the use of standalone sensors, which often proved to have an unacceptable false alarm rate.

With the ability to provide warnings of overhead lightning prior to the fi rst lightning discharge and a false alarm rate that is almost zero, Biral’s innovative sensor represents a signifi cant step change in lightning detection technology. Early warning of potential lightning activity is vital to ensure the continued safe operations, and safety of personnel, at any wind farm.

With support from the Catapult, plans are now being developed to further demonstrate the technology in real-world conditions at Vattenfall’s European Offshore Wind Demonstration Centre, off the coast of Aberdeen, giving wind farm owner/operators increased confi dence in the product and opening up a route to market for the technology.

Hugo Aniksztejn, International Sales Specialist with Biral, said: “Working with ORE Catapult has been invaluable in helping us better understand how the BTD-350 thunderstorm and lightning detection system can offer real-world safety benefi ts to the wind turbine sector. We hope that this partnership will give potential customers from this sector confi dence in the performance of our innovative new product.”

With its rugged design for marine applications, the BTD-350 Thunderstorm Detector is a standalone sensor that detects the presence of all forms of lightning to a range of 83 km. The BTD-350 is designed for marine applications, where severe weather, salt water corrosion and platform vibration produce a challenging environment for environmental sensors. The metalwork is corrosion-resistant stainless steel and aluminium, further protected by marine-grade paintwork. Reinforced antenna supports prevent damage from excessive vibration. This design has been extensively tested in accordance with European marine vibration, marine radio interference and marine corrosion standards.

New generation of ultrasonic

snow depth sensors Sommer Messtechnik have recently unveiled their new USH-9 ultrasonic, snow depth sensors, which has been designed to provide precise, reliable and continuous results whilst being maintenance free. The USH-9 has proved itself in extreme conditions, having performed well even in research stations in Antarctica. The sensors are easily integrated into existing measurement stations and weather stations using either analogue or digital interfaces.

USH-9 sensors come with a robust, sealed ceramic membrane which takes care about the maintenance free operation. Due to the use of an optimised protective shield, to defend against the effects of snow and ice, no heating is needed, furthermore a highly effi cient integrated lightning protection is included as well. This allows the sensor to perform even in the most bitter of winter conditions. The sensors will automatically compensate for fl uctuating temperatures affecting the speed of its ultrasonic signal. The USH-9’s capability to perform reliably autonomously makes it a highly economic option in terms of lifecycle costs and reduces the costs of ownership.

The sensors’ parameters can be set simply by utilising COMMANDER software. There is also a ‘sleep mode’ to reduce energy consumption between measuring phases and operators can adjust the quantity of measurements to suit their specifi c task. Operators can detect snow falls, precipitation intensity, whether snow has settled on the ground and status updates on previous limit values. Specially the new added features to recognize snow fall and rain add a lot of value to the new maintenance free sensor.

SOMMER has enjoyed excellent feedback from very satisfi ed customers, one of whom described the accuracy of the USH-9 as ‘breathtaking’. This sensor is the latest development from a company who has specialist in highly accurate measurement technology for environmental monitoring for over 3 decades.

Precision instruments and systems for professional meteorology and environmental monitoring

The company Theodor Friedrichs develops and manufactures precision instruments and systems for professional meteorology and environmental monitoring for more than 60 years. Typical applications are automatic weather observation systems for meteorological services, military forces, research and environmental investigations. Automatic weather observation systems can be supplied for stationary and mobile use or specially confi gured as per customers’ requirements. Classic analogue instruments completes the product range. A wide range of test and calibration chambers, including wind tunnels, can be offered. Theodor Friedrichs delivers their instruments and systems all over the world assisted by their long-term, reliable local partners. Our data logger COMBILOG 1022, which is in operation worldwide since 2010, is used by many weather services and universities, as it is easy to confi gure for a great variety of meteorological sensors. Certifi ed according to ISO 9001 and KTA 1401.
