Fragrant Herbs Advice for gardeners from Chestnut Nursery
Chestnut is brimming with herbs and now is the time to get planting them to ensure you have a plentiful supply of these delicious and fragrant offerings throughout the summer.
There is nothing more satisfying than being able to go out and pick fresh herbs to pep up your dishes, not to mention the nutritional benefi ts they provide. Some can be used to make teas, such as lemon balm and mint. Beautifully aromatic, lemon balm is very calming as a drink and is easy to grow – readily self-seeding itself, it will grow in most conditions. Mint favours damp conditions, but will need containing as it can be very invasive.
Mediterranean herbs, such as rosemary, sage, thyme, marjoram and oregano are happy in containers and require similar growing conditions. They do not like to be waterlogged, preferring to be watered just as the compost is drying out. Plant with good drainage (some gravel/stones in the bottom is ideal) and feed every 2-3 weeks.

Lavender can be used to line pathways, giving a lovely scent as you brush past. The fl owers when dried can be used to fl avour biscuits and sugar or in the bath for relaxation. Again, they prefer a sunny, well drained spot. If you require any advice on how to plant them, our lovely helpers at the nursery will be happy to assist you.
