Springdale First School News
The second half of the Spring Term proved to be as busy and enjoyable as ever. The school take over to raise money for Comic Relief was great fun. The children who took on responsibilities such as being Headteacher, caretakers, lunchtime supervisors and offi ce staff showed how capable they are. All children had the opportunity to be teachers and to teach new skills to their peers – these ranged from archery to zoology! In addition, the children proved to be ruthless in applying the Golden Rules and even I spent some time sitting outside the offi ce to refl ect on how to improve my behaviour!
Our Easter Egg Hunt was another special occasion and an opportunity for the children to enjoy the spring sunshine and to have fun outdoors. Chocolate was the name of the game, with a variety of activities such as a chocolate tombola, chocolate raffl e and egg on a string, as well as the egg hunt itself. Events such as this take a great deal of organisation and I am indebted to staff and parents who gave so generously of their time to prepare for and run the event.
At this time of year, the school grounds look particularly attractive as the spring colour of plant and trees coming into bloom is everywhere. One of our school aims is to ensure that children remain curious
and in awe of the wonders of the world around them, so appreciating the beauty of their surroundings and taking time to refl ect on nature is very important.
Teaching the children to, ‘Respect everyone and everything,’ is our overarching Golden Rule which we take seriously. Sadly, the school has had some unwelcome visitors recently in the form of vandals, who have entered the school grounds at weekends. The outdoor learning areas, which staff work so hard to make stimulating for our youngest children, have been left with cigarette ends, bottles and offensive notes; in addition some of the resources have been deliberately broken, eg. boxes of resources have been thrown onto the playground where they have smashed and the contents scattered. I would be grateful if local people could pass on the message through reminders to young people they know, that such actions are unacceptable and that the police are treating this seriously.
We’re looking forward to the Summer Term when we will continue with our 50th anniversary celebrations, which all are welcome to attend.
