Poole Athletic Club Early-season successes
Our track season started at Yeovil on the fi rst weekend in April. Their Bill Whistlecroft Festival offered early-season competition for all ages and events. For PAC, Rachael J set a new club record in the u20W 1500m Steeplechase. Caitlin B won the u17W Hammer and u20W Discus. On Sunday it was the Para-athletes who featured, with Marcus P (track) and Heather R (throws) winning two cerebral palsy events each. Para-biker Nathan B won all his three track races.
The BAC John Rumbold Memorial Meeting at sunny King’s Park on 2nd April attracted athletes from Dorset, Hampshire, and beyond. Forty two PAC athletes competed during the comprehensive six-hour programme.
Stars of the u11 Quadkids (four events on a Decathlon-style points basis), were Harley T (pictured right) who won the boys’ competition and Jaya C who was runner-up in the girls’.
Tom C (u17M) and Sam Wheeler (u20M) had two excellent head-to-heads, winning their sprints and combining to get good early-season times. Many of the others had their fi rst experience of
an older age group and therefore higher hurdles and heavier throwing implements, for example. This meant many did personal bests in their ‘new’ events! Among our winners were Fleur M (u15G Triple Jump); u13B William R (1500), Connor C (Hurdles and HJ), Harry M (Javelin) and Ashley G (Shot); Edward B-S (u15 100); Richard W (VM 200); and Ruth E (VW Hammer). Others like Jas L, Lewis N, and Adam B showed encouraging form.
The fi rst matches in four of our fi ve leagues happened in April. The signs are promising at the time of writing! However our main target as a club is the South-West League (which we won last year). It will be a new experience for us as there will only be one division of 11 clubs. Those will be four enormous matches in 2017! The fi rst of which is on 7th May in Exeter.
