The

50tie year ALASTAIR MACHRAY ON THE TIE THAT BINDS

ROYAL LIVERPOOL AT HOYLAKE is a Club where traditions abound and glorious anecdotes flow as freely as the post- round drinks. The Club’s influence stretches across

the planet and as far afield as the game of golf is played. The Atlanta Athletic

Club, proud

parent Club of the great Bobby Jones, has its Hoylake room, marking Jones’ victory in the 1930 Open Championship, one leg of his ‘Impregnable Quadrilateral’. And in the Hoylake room hangs a little

slice of Royal Liverpool history - the 50- year tie. The story began in 1987 when RLGC

captain Keith Dodman decided he would like to recognise those who had held Hoylake membership for 50 years or more. On March 26 that year, Keith hosted a dinner at the Club and invited ten members who had reached the half century as well as a sprinkling of other selected guests. The 50-up squad was Sir Tom

Harley, Nobby Roberts, Tony Dalzell, John

Graham, Michael Marshall,

Bruce Thompson, Bill Renison, Paddy Williamson, Richard Cornelius and Bill McAfee, all of whom received a 50-year commemoration tie from the captain. Also in attendance were Tony Colvin

who was to succeed Keith as captain, John

Behrend, 54 who chaired the

Museum Committee, Lesley Edwards of the Liverpool Daily Post and John
