PGA CAPTAIN AND ROYAL LIVERPOOL’S PGA MASTER PROFESSIONAL, JOHN HEGGARTY, HAS THE LOWDOWN ON THE DOWNSWING.

The downswing is without question one of the key components of the golf swing because it will decide whether or not you achieve a successful and powerful impact position when striking the ball. However, I have always been wary of experts who describe the start of the downswing as ‘driving the hips’ or ‘clearing the left side’ because, in my view, golfers should think more about their feet. But first…

Let’s dispel some myths

Myth One: DRIVING THE HIPS. Too much lower body action will cause the upper body to fall back and the spine to lose its shape. This causes the club shaft to lag behind, leading to a very in to out swing path that in turn generates a wide variety of unwelcome shot shapes.

Myth Two: CLEAR THE HIPS. If the hips spin out of the shot without the correct loading of the left foot and leg, the club will be thrown outside the target line which results in a steep chopping action and normally a loss of power.
