Welcome A MESSAGE FROM THE CAPTAINS
ON BEHALF OF Royal Liverpool Golf Club it is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 2017 edition of our magazine. Being a member of this historic Club and playing
the links regularly are great privileges, but perhaps an even greater honour is inviting golfers from home and abroad to share the Hoylake experience. We hope you have a wonderful day making either a first time or repeat visit. Hoylake is very much an international Club. You will see from our honours board and fine collection of memorabilia that many of the competitions played here over nearly one hundred and fifty years have been won by some of the finest golfers the world has ever produced - including the incomparable Bobby Jones in his famous Grand Slam year of 1930. In this issue we mark the 50th
anniversary of the popular Open victory of Argentine, Roberto De Vicenzo, as members who were youngsters back in 1967 share their memories. As ever you will find the course in
great condition thanks to the sterling efforts of head green keeper, Craig Gilhom, and his dedicated team. Take time to enjoy the views across the Dee towards Hilbre Island and the Welsh Hills as you play your round and be sure to look out for (and don’t step on) our
famous and protected natterjack toads. We know you will be well looked after
by John Heggarty and his team in the professional shop and, if you ask nicely, you may get some advice from them about how to get out of our devilish bunkers – our suggestion is try not to go in them. We are very proud that John, who has been our professional for more than 30 years, has been honoured by his peers and will serve as PGA Captain for GB&I 2017-19. You can benefit from more of his excellent Top Tips on page 18.
We are confident that your golf round
will go smoothly and pay tribute to the efforts and hard work of our admirable secretary, Simon Newland, and his hardworking administrative assistants, course rangers and starters, the latter led by the incomparable Jim McVey - a Hoylake institution in his own right. Shaun Herbert and his catering team
do a fantastic job in the clubhouse and will make you feel very much at home. This year’s Club highlights include
the 20th playing of the Harold Hilton Tournament, an open competition named in honour of one of the truly great amateur players, golf
pioneers
and most famous of all past Hoylake members. The Club is also proud to host the Hoylake Open Scratch Mixed Foursomes, the premier event of its type in the UK, and we are delighted to welcome back the Duke of York
Young Champions’ Trophy later in the year. It will be exciting to watch some of the world’s greatest budding talent take on this challenging course and see who comes out on top. Last but certainly not least, we
would like to thank all our advertisers and everyone who has contributed so generously to this magazine. We look forward to meeting and playing with many of you during the year ahead, particularly during the much anticipated Company Day on September 1st. n
