Royal Dornoch is one of the must visit golfing destinations in the UK

culminated in a gala dinner for 300 people. It was an unforgettable week. In October I went to Quaker Ridge

in New York State for their centenary celebrations

accompanied by Chris

Petersen and Ken Egan. The celebration was based around the Walker Cup which Quaker Ridge hosted in 1999 with past hosts and players invited to take part. Quaker Ridge was designed by the renowned architect AW Tillinghast and is a fine parkland course with trademark Tillinghast greens which

are very

challenging. We had an excellent week and also played at nearby Winged Foot which has hosted the US Open five times. With the onset of Autumn the dinner season began again in earnest with more speeches to make at Heswall, Woolton, Southport & Ainsdale, Prenton, Hesketh, Caldy, and Leasowe. However, by then I was an old hand and it was not as daunting as earlier in the year. One of my unexpected duties was

to skipper the snooker team. There are a number of home and away matches throughout the autumn and winter organised by Nigel Davies and Kevin Williamson. My snooker leaves something to be desired but the matches were great fun and I made my record break of 11 against Bromborough! Finally I must mention the Society of

Liverpool Golf Captains. It comprises 27 Clubs from the Liverpool area, and each

year the 27 current Captains meet up at intervals to play golf, attend dinners and swap experiences. This year we have had a lot of fun and will continue to do so in the years to come if we are spared. What a great year it has been. I have

enjoyed every minute of it and my gratitude goes to everyone for their help and encouragement. In particular, my thanks to Briar without whom the whole enterprise would not have been possible. The final tally was 150 functions attended, 158 rounds of golf on 39 courses in 3 continents, and 82 speeches involving more than 35,000 words! I now have

enormous pleasure in

handing Potter’s wand to Bruce Taylor who I am sure will represent the Club with distinction during his year in office.
