WHAM BAM THANKYOU PAM

PAM SHENNAN HAS HAD AN ILLUSTRIOUS INVOLVEMENT IN

Rye is a course with wonderful views

to present Mrs Audrey Williams, Mrs Pauline Frazer and Mrs Trudi Crawshaw with their scarves. You can find out more about the occasion by reading Alastair Machray’s report on page 54. The Christmas affair

together, entertained by their resident bard - i.e. ME! In February eight of us travelled to

Rye and it was well worth the five hour journey. Rye is a challenging course with testing winds and wonderful views. We enjoyed

excellent hospitality and my

thanks to Audrey Briggs (of whom more later) for organising our trip. In my final week of office Liz Collinge and Sue Corrigan organised a memorable fashion Show and afternoon tea. What a lot of fun we had. My thanks go to John Heggarty who provided the clothes, and to the models - not only can our ladies play golf but they look good too. Finally I must mention a very exciting

innovation. Our Ladies Initiative is a project encouraging more of us to take up the game of golf. Over the winter months we had two taster sessions run by our esteemed and supportive professional, John Heggarty, for female relatives and friends of members, and we have begun a six week coaching programme. There are already eleven keen ladies and hopefully we can encourage them to take up the sport and eventually become members of Royal Liverpool. We are indebted to Jeanne Bell, Sue Ramsey, Doug Norval and Secretary Simon Newland for their

hard work putting together a package, and of course to Council for supporting this venture. It has been a great honour to be

Captain of the Ladies at Royal Liverpool Golf Club and I have appreciated all the support and help I have received from all our members, staff, the Ladies Committee, in particular Brenda Cross, Secretary of the Ladies section, whose organisational skills are legendary. I have had

a very happy year. Thank you so

much. May I extend every good wish to Helen

Heggarty, our new Captain for 2017. I am sure that she will have a lot of fun and many memorable moments.

COME FRY WITH ME RLGC member Claire Fry is now an Event Co- ordinator for the Ladies European Tour based at the Buckinghamshire Golf Club.

Traveling across the world with the players and staff her key role is arranging staff and player logistics on all outside the ropes activities. She combines this with assisting players at official functions and sponsors events.

Her job also includes supporting Team

Europe at the Solheim Cup. Claire has been a member at Hoylake since 2002 and plays off a handicap of 3. She has represented Hoylake in both scratch and league teams and has also played for Cheshire. With such a busy timetable her own game has taken a back seat of late, although she still finds time to join the Ladies at RLGC for a game when she is home.

CHESHIRE GOLF OVER THE LAST FOUR DECADES. NOW SHE’S BEEN ELECTED A COUNTY VICE PRESIDENT.

However, but for a twist of fate Pam might never have taken up the game at all. She was diagnosed with a heart murmur at the age of 12 and told she must not play any sport at all until she was 18. Lucky for Cheshire Golf she lived on

the edge of Heswall Golf Club and one day spotted a 4 handicapper (later to be her first husband) hitting some rather nice shots. She thought: “I’d like to play golf like that.” When she finally got the medical all clear she took up the game, eventually playing to a handicap of 6. Pam has done just about every job

in the book for Cheshire Ladies, but closest to her heart, as Junior County Organiser, was the drive to get more girls involved in the sport. She says: “With support from the County we had great success and a lot of fun. We produced numerous national champions, four Curtis Cup Players, and won the Finals of the English Inter County Matches. Helen Heggarty and Jeanne Bell were in that Cheshire side.” She recalls how she borrowed a bus

from a friend to drive a team to Penrith and Bishop Auckland for Northern Girls Events. Many had never been away from home on their own before and got up to all sorts of tricks. As an overseer for the English Girls Championships one player she had to keep a close eye on was a young Laura Davies! “I have some wonderful memories

and I was lucky enough to work with some inspirational County Captains. I am so proud to be elected a Vice President. If I’ve been able to help inspire young people in some small way it’s all been worthwhile.”
