National Golf Links of America on Long Island in 1922. During the dark days of World War
Two that followed, golf and leisure pursuits in general were far from the minds of the British people. Golf went into hibernation and it was not until 1946 that competitive competitions of any significance were held. The scarcity of steel clubs and golf balls during wartime - a little known consequence of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941 was the golf ball crisis it triggered. The lack of the raw material required for the manufacturing of golf balls (both new and remoulded) occupied the minds of the hierarchy of The R&A. Fortunately The R&A reached a compromise with the British Government and limited golf ball production continued. you,

courses throughout the country were r e q u isitione d for the “Dig for Victory” effort and
made e w
not “drive in” until September 1946. The game of golf recovered slowly
from the devastation of war but it was not until after the Open Championship of 1946, won by American Sam Snead, that The R&A got back in the business of running and engaging in international competitive golf matches. Championship golf was suspended in the United States from 1942 to 1945. The joint efforts of Britain and the
USA in the war helped very much to forge strong bonds between the two countries. An even better relationship between The R&A and the USGA was
useful
contributions towards the war effort.
