The team comprised Ali Johnson, Amanda Ryan, Joyce Tuomey, Val Howell, Julia Leary and me. On arrival we were given a warm, hospitable welcome from our hostess, Rosemary, assigned to look after us all week. Day 1 brought a practice round at

nearby Nairn Dunbar before the next three days of competition at Nairn Golf Club. Nestled on the shores of The Moray

Firth, Nairn is rightly regarded as one of the best links courses in Scotland. The main event began on the Monday evening with a flag raising ceremony, a piper and a ‘wee dram or two’ in the bar. We were then given a delightful ‘goody bag’ that included even more drams and team photographs were taken. The finishing touches were supplied by our excellent team sweaters.

On the first tee the starter dispensed

local information telling us that we could play from the beach if we happened to slice our balls onto the sand. We thanked him for this encouraging mental image and headed for a practice round, slightly nervous, in beautiful sunshine but a ‘three club wind’. All the teams from the U.S. benefit from the slope rating system so the British clubs find it difficult to compete on a level playing field. However, we were very proud of our overall performance, finishing a joint 4th overall out of ten. We are hosting this prestigious event

in 2018, so preparations are already underway to ensure we put on as wonderful an event for our guests and give them a traditional Royal Liverpool welcome.

It was my first visit to Africa and I

wanted to see more of the country than just golf courses. I visited a game reserve and got the chance to walk with lions, something I never thought possible! This trip started my year on a high and

on my return I played 14 events on the Ladies Access Series. I made the cut in 10 of them. This included 3 top 3 finishes and 3 top 10 finishes. The series saw me compete in France, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Belgium, and

England. How my life has changed! I also had two opportunities to play

on the Ladies European Tour, making the cut in the flagship event, The ISPS Handa Ladies European Masters

in

Germany. My aim for the year was to finish in

the top 10 order of merit. Unfortunately I just missed out by finishing 11th, but I have set my sights on next season and all my preparations have been going really well. Watch this space!

LAST BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST, AUDREY BRIGGS

Audrey has been a member of Royal Liverpool Golf Club for 47 years and was Captain of the Ladies in 1992.

was the same, though, 4-3, and thus we became Ladies Millennium Links champions for 2016. At the formal dinner in the evening we

were delighted to be presented with the trophy and look forward to defending it next year.

She has an amazing golfing pedigree being Welsh Champion from 1970-1974, representing GB in the Vagliano Trophy in 1971 and 1973, and was crowned Cheshire Champion five times. Audrey was Captain of Cheshire in

1980 and Cheshire Seniors Captain in 2007.

She played for Wales between 1970 and 1983, and for the Welsh seniors

MO-MENTOUS IT’S BEEN A YEAR OF NOTABLE VICTORIES FOR RLGC’S MAUREEN RICHMOND. FIRST SHE WON THE CHESHIRE SENIOR LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP, PREVAILING OVER JANE BURKE FROM SANDIWAY BY THE IMPRESSIVE MARGIN OF 5&4. IN MARCH SHE TRIUMPHED IN THE SPANISH OVER 60S SENIOR WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL AMATEUR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP AT THE ISLA CANELA GOLF CLUB. MAUREEN ALSO FINISHED 6TH IN THE OVER 50S EVENT. GO MO!

between 2003 and 2006. She was Captain of the Northern Seniors in 2013. Audrey met her husband Laurie at the

Hoylake Scratch Mixed Foursomes and never looked back. She has held many offices at Royal Liverpool, but none was more important to her or the Club than the role of Junior Organiser, which she held brilliantly for twenty years. Golf has always been fun for her and

she has instilled this into the juniors at RLGC. Audrey continues to play and support

the Ladies Teams and is a true inspiration to us all. ■
